Overview

Switching from a gas stove to a wood burning stove is a great way of minimizing your dependence on fuel you must carry into the backcountry. With Zia Fabrication's Titanium Grill, you can take this minimization to yet another level by leaving the stove at home altogether. If you backpack and camp in areas where firewood is plentiful and there are no burning restrictions, a small wood fire can be an excellent cooking method. Whether your style of cooking be boiling water for pasta, frying eggs in oil, or grilling up a freshly caught trout, the Titanium Grill will meet the need.

Strength

This grill is made from commercially pure titanium. The metal is strong and also quite pliable. The grill is shaped with an upward camber to increase its holding capacity. By carefully curving the camber upward more, you can increase the grill's weight capacity slightly. The grill can in fact be bent into thirds, at right angles, and be self-supporting for a small pot. Bend it back to its original shape when you are done cooking. Occasional use in this manner will not cause the metal to break. This should not be the usual practice, but it can be handy if there aren't any rocks available to support the grill.

Safety

As the hot grill cools down, oxygen is incorporated into the outer surface, creating a colorful layer of titanium dioxide that is integrally bonded to the titanium rods. This is a bio-compatible metal oxide that should not dissolve or chip off into your food. In the unlikely event that is does, it is biologically inert (as is the titanium metal itself) and can be considered safe for cooking directly upon it. Titanium dioxide has FDA approval for use in food coloring agents.

Cleaning

After use, if the grill has any food particles on it, cleaning is achieved by simply placing it directly in the fire to burn off any particulate matter. This will only take a few minutes. At home, it can be cleaned as you would any pot or pan using soap, water, and a scrub pad.
