GEAR GUIDE: Lightweight Canister Stoves
Gear Guide Criteria: Canister stoves are usually heavier than alcohol stoves and the fuel has to be carried in a metal canister. However canister stoves are very fuel efficient and many argue that for trips of more than a couple of nights these stoves lead the pack for power, reliability, versatility and total weight too. They don't need priming, they excel at simmering, but operation near or below freezing requires some skill lest the canister freeze up. They are dearer than alcohol stoves but are usually cheaper than white gas stoves. A windshield is not always absolutley necessary, but is advisable for good fuel economy. Their weak point may be the limited availability of new canisters in remote places. For this Gear Guide only upright screw-thread stoves weighing less than 6 ounces (170 grams) will be listed.
