does it have to be? on 11/03/2009 12:31:55 MST Print View

I wasn't aware that it ever had to be. I own a lot of sil-nylon stuff, but none of the instructions mentioned ever having to re-coat. What makes you ask the question?

Hi Keith, reading posts about recoating made me ask the question...I was surprised as well. A Nemo Nano tent owner mentioned this as an advantage of the materials used in his tent over silnylon in the Nemo Meta 1P and 2P thread from Outdoor Retailer.

pretty sure the it is impregnated and thus never has to be recoated and both sides are equally waterproof... could be wrong though

From what I understand it is impregnated with silicon so does not need to be recoated, unless, of course you require a higher level of "waterproofness"

hope so, like keeping my gear in good shape, but don't want more maintenance to bother with...

I suspect that fewer than a dozen people have ever attempted to "recoat" silnylon.

I have recoated the underside of the groundsheet in my 2-man silnylon tent - on a balcony in Courmayer, Italy as it happens. But that was after maybe 4 hard years of use, and it only leaked a little when there were inches of water on the ground. I smeared a very thin layer of silicone sealant over the surface.

I have also experimented with using a silicone spray on the fly of the tent, but not out of need. Not sure whether that did anything or not.

I suspect there is a lot of waffle and crap circulating in the world ...

Cheers

OK, that's dam funny.

I'm guessing Roger is using "waffle" in the same sense as "blather" though. Doubt they've heard of Adam Corolla down under, but I could be worng.

In this case it was meant as waffle (going on about nothing, or more precisely equivocating or blathering) AND talking crap as in talking excreta,rubbish...
Not related to waffle crap without the conjunction" and"...
