Course Overview

WT2-WBP provides you with the knowledge and skills to travel light, but in safety and comfort, in cold winter conditions.

Curriculum

In addition to our Intermediate level Wilderness Trekking Curriculum, WT2-WBP includes the following components:

  • Avalanche safety and rescue training
  • Snow shelter building
  • Gear and techniques for snow travel: snowshoes, skis, snowboards, and pulks
  • Vapor barrier gear and techniques;
  • Winter tempo: short days and long nights
  • Winter firebuilding for safety and warmth
  • Winter cooking strategies using alternative stove systems
  • Food and nutrition for winter trekking
  • Route planning and routefinding during the winter
  • Pushing the limits of ultralight clothing and sleep systems at cold temperatures

Course Logistics

WT2-WBP starts with a one-day session held in the comfort of our remote mountain retreat center that includes avalanche safety and rescue training, lightweight trekking classroom training sessions, and some snow travel and camping skills practice held outside. Then, you and your course mates will embark on winter trek through the deep snows of a vast mountain landscape.

  • Duration: 7 days
  • Intended Audience: This course is aimed at backpackers experienced at lightweight travel in any season, or experienced winter backpackers that may not be accustomed to winter travel with lightweight gear. Travelers who enjoy walking on snowshoes or skis are welcome. We'll be traveling in steep, mountainous terrain, and we should have some time in the afternoons to carve a few turns for those who are interested.
