Backpacking Light Wilderness Trekking II - Long Distance Packrafting (WT2-LDP)

Backpacking Light Wilderness Trekking II - Long Distance Packrafting (WT2-LDP)

WT2-LDP provides comprehensive and intermediate-to-advanced instruction in lightweight philosophy, techniques, and gear, tailored specifically for long distance packrafting traverses in mountainous terrain (14 days).

Course Overview

Imagine hiking to the top of a peak, then dropping into a valley on the other side, where you slip into ... a boat ... and paddle quietly down a meandering mountain river, watching the miles go by as you soak up the sun. This is what trekking in a backpackable raft (or "packraft") can be like - and you don't have to worry about foot blisters!

Or, for the adventurous, how about hiking up a canyon, dropping your packraft in, and riding its roiling water back to the car?

You will experience this - and more - in WT2-LDP

Learn the most advanced techniques in both packraft trekking and packrafting, and enjoy wilderness trekking and packrafting in one of the nation's premier packrafting destinations.

Curriculum

In addition to our Intermediate level Wilderness Trekking Curriculum, WT2-LDP includes the following components:

  • Whitewater rescue and safety techniques adapted specifically for packrafting;
  • History of packrafting and historical applications / expeditions;
  • Gear for packrafting and packraft trekking;
  • Packrafting technique on flat water, moving rivers, and Class II-III whitewater;
  • Packrafting gear maintenance and repair;
  • An overview of packrafting routes and areas in North America;
  • Packrafting route planning logistics, map reading, and research resources.

Course Logistics

WT2-LDP starts with an intensive, two day packraft safety and rescue training course, with Class II/III whitewater floats on local rivers at the end of the day. Then, after a short classroom immersion session held in the comfort of our remote mountain retreat center, you and your course mates will embark on two trips. The first will be a short expedition into a remote creek, and the second will be a longer traverse across the northern perimeter of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (there will be a resupply in between). At the end of your trek, you'll enjoy a final night, with debriefing sessions, back at our retreat center.
