I had the pleasure of taking a moment to celebrate the coming of spring and regenerate my excitement for exchanging skis and snowshoes for hiking shoes by watching WALKING THE WEST on DVD. This movie was produced by Irishman Miles Murphy about his thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail with a New Zealander.
While there are plenty of documentaries about thru-hiking out there, this one is truly magical, capturing the spirit of thru-hiking in the west at its best.

Walking the West was the winner of "BEST DOCUMENTARY" at the California Independent Film Festival and the award is well-deserved. I sat in awe of what normal folks are able to accomplish and reaching the end of the video was not unlike reaching the end of a thru-hike:

A New Zealander and an Irishman quit their jobs, cash in their savings and walk 2,626 miles from Mexico to Canada along one of the longest and most challenging foot trails in the in the world, the Pacific Crest Trail.
Their route takes them through some of the most spectacular scenery in North America, including California's deserts, the high mountain passes of Sierra Nevada, the Cascade Mountains and the lush forests of Oregon and Washington State.
Walking at a challenging pace of 21 miles a day for 4 /1/2 months, they must cross the Canadian border before the approaching winter storms. The ordeal forced one of them to quit just 60 miles before the finish. An amusingly poignant tale of about two novice hikers search for adventure and enlightenment on the Pacific Crest Trail.
