Weighed On Our Scales » 1.5 oz (42 g)
The Vargo Triad XE is not a replacement or improvement over the existing Vargo Triad stove, but rather, an entirely different concept.
The Triad XE contains two separate units (shown above): a stove base (with fold-out legs and pot supports, above right), and an alcohol burner (above left). The stove base (0.8 oz) can be used alone when cooking with Esbit tablets. The alcohol burner can be used alone (0.7 oz) in combination with another pot stand (e.g., homemade), or, combined with the stove base for an integrated system that gives you the flexibility of using either type of fuel while reaping the benefits of the Triad's fold out legs and pot supports.
The Vargo Titanium Triad XE is a dual-fuel (alcohol / fuel tab) stove. The XE was designed for weight-conscious backpackers that recognize the advantages and disadvantages of burning denatured alcohol. Specifically, denatured alcohol does not burn as well in high altitude, cold temperatures or windy conditions. In these situations burning fuel tabs is recommended.
Characteristics of burning alcohol in the XE include intense heat during the priming stage and moderate heat once primed. Once primed the stove is very fuel efficient, using very little alcohol. In general, the XE can be used effectively in any condition, making it a stove that we believe sets a higher standard in ultralight hiking.
NOTE: A special windscreen is required! The windscreen will maintain the intensity and efficiency of the flame. Please see instructions on how to make the windscreen.
NOTE: if burning fuel tabs simply remove inner container and place fuel tab in center of outer base.
Important Note: the windscreen for the Triad stove should be made with air holes cut on the bottom (as shown) and long enough so that there is a gap between the windscreen and your pot . If there is not enough air between the windscreen and pot this will create excessive heat and cause fuel to overflow.
Important Note: The windscreen for the Triad XE should be made without bottom semi-circular holes and there should not be a gap between your pot and the windscreen. It needs to be a tight fit.
Tip: Roll and place windscreen inside your pot for easy storage.
