There is some opportunity to "strip" this tripod down to its bare essentials: removing the Velcro strap and vinyl feet on each of its three legs drops the weight by 20% or so and gets the tripod down to ~1.35 oz...For the hardcore, a significant bit of plastic can be cut off the tripod legs with a hacksaw. The result: something less than an ounce, and still fully functional with plenty of support for a small digital camera (see image at right, Ryan Jordan's interpretation of a modified Ultrapod Mini: 0.89 oz). If you want to retain the functionality of being able to strap it to a tree, trekking pole, etc., the 0.17-oz 3/4" wide Velcro strap can be trimmed in width by half or more and still be entirely functional.

Overview

The mini is a modified, “fun” version of the UltraPod I. The same basic design, except the legs are slightly shorter and trimmed at an angle like the UltraPod II. Molded in translucent “edge glow” polycarbonate resin, in orange, green, and blue, with metallic silver feet. The strap is colored velcro “one wrap” and designed to be easily removable. This is intended to be a “fun” tripod for use with small digital cameras, web cams etc. Can also be used to mount remote flashes to light stands using the velcro strap. This is a very cool looking tripod and attracts the attention of everyone that sees it.
