Titanium foil windscreen (9" high x 32" long, 0.9 oz), with pre-punched holes for ventilation, that can be cut to size as needed. The windscreen shown in the photograph at right is sized for a 2L MSR Titanium Pot and a Coleman PowerMax Remote Canister Liquid Fuel Stove and weighs 0.45 oz.
Applications. The LARGE titanium foil windscreen is intended to be used as material for homemade windscreens for use with larger and/or taller stove systems, such as canister fuel stove systems*, white gas stove systems, and stove systems that integrate larger pots.
* Windscreens can only be recommended for use with remote-canister systems. Using a windscreen with a canister stove fixed directly to the fuel tank increases the risk of canister explosion which might cause foul language, injury, blindness, or death.
Advantages of Titanium Foil. Springy material rolls easily for better storage and more precise and even ventilation around the cookpot. Can be made thinner for far more strength and heat resistance than aluminum, and for far less weight than stainless steel foils.
Disadvantages of Titanium Foil. While titanium foil can be folded, it will not regain its shape after folding, and it cannot be "crushed".
Storage. This windscreen is intended to be rolled during storage. The windscreen shown in the photo has been trimmed to fit an MSR 2L titanium pot sitting on a Coleman Xponent gas stove. The windscreen can be rolled and stored in the bottom of this pot. Other places it can be stored: secured with a rubber band around a circular water bottle or cookpot, stored in a fishing rod tube, etc.
In Use. The titanium foil length (provided as 32") should be trimmed to fit your cooking pot. Leave some extra length to allow for some overlap, but giving 1/4" to 1/2" of ventilation space around the circumference of the cooking pot. More space provides better "chimney" venting and faster burn times, less space provides more controlled ventilation and usually, better fuel efficiency. The edges can be secured with a paperclip, or, the windscreen ends can be crimped to provide a self-fitting tab on each end for security. Experiment with your desired configuration before cutting the windscreen!
