Named after the remotest region in the lower forty-eight United States, the Thorofare Collection reflects the absolute need to trim as much weight as possible in order to trek to the remotest regions on the planet. Traditional styling (collared, snap shirt and long pants) reflects the style of the first 19th century explorers to the Thorofare region, but modern fabrics reflect high-tech performance. The Thorofare is perhaps most famous for its extreme heat for a mountain region (daytime temperatures commonly exceed 90 degrees at 8,000 feet) and its ability to produce more mosquitoes than any temperate climate in the world.

The Thorofare collection is designed to combat the stresses it's namesake and other locations can throw at you. Optimized for hiking in hot weather, and in buggy conditions, without the need for chemical, pesticide-based fiber treatments the Thorofare has shined in field tests as both a next-to-skin layer and a light shell layer worn over base layers.
The Thorofare Trekking Pant is styled quite specifically, paying strict attention to minimizing unnecessary features to save weight. The pant is zipper-less at the crotch, has three pockets, a drawstring waist and no inner liner. Two side pockets (e.g hand pockets) and one zippered and flapped cargo pocket will hold your belongings and are well-flushed against the pant to avoid snagging. The waist has a stretchy drawstring and cordlock for tightening. The pant legs taper slightly towards the bottom. They are neither tight nor loose.
Ultralight backpacking gearlists often contain two columns, Gear Carried and Gear Worn. People touting the lowest weights in their packing lists usually refer to their Gear Carried weight which refers to the weight of gear in their backpack. These weights are often impressive but leave out the weight of items that are worn on their person such as trekking poles, shoes and clothing.
Reducing weight in all categories will improve hiking performance, reduce stress and thereby increase overall enjoyment. Three items carried by hikers that are often heavy are shoes, trekking poles and clothing. Backpacking Light has addressed lightweight trekking poles with our Stix line and has addressed insulated clothing with our Cocoon and UL Merino lines. Backpacking Light now introduces the Thorofare Collection, a line of synthetic trekking clothing low in weight and high in durability and style.
Backpacking Light is devoted to helping you achieve the perfect clothing system. For summer hiking the Thorofare Trekking Pant can provide protection from the sun or bugs and will act as a barrier against the first chilling breezes of the morning and evening. When hiking in the shoulder seasons of Spring and Fall a bit more warmth will be desired. The cut of the Thorofare Trekking Pant is such that it pairs nicely with our line of UL Merino Wool base layer apparel. The combination of the Merino base layer and the Thorofare outer layer will provide solid, all around performance in thermal regulation, comfort and adaptability to your environment.
Machine wash cold using Revivex Synthetic Fabric Cleaner . An optional step if you want the surface to retain an aggressive DWR treatment to minimize soiling and maximize water bead-up is to use Revivex Spray on Water Repellent. Another option would be Sawyer Bug Repellent - Permethrin clothing treatment.
