The SpinTarp X-Pro is a durable, minimalist spinnaker tarp for bivy/tarp campers available in both grey and black spinnaker fabric. A flat, rectangular design allows for multiple pitching configurations, and the small size and weight is well-suited to SUL pursuits.
This tarp, designed for the most basic protection from the elements, can be pitched in a number of configurations. The A-frame style pictured to the right works well for rainy conditions, but the popular lean-to style is possible as well for protecting against wind or driving rain. These two styles can be combined into other configurations for unique pitches as well.
This tarp is sized at 7.75 x 4.25 feet and has three grosgrain tie-outs per long side and one tie out at each ridgeline end (for a total of eight tie-outs). Check out pitching techniques in the Backpacking Light article Advanced Tarp Camping Techniques for Inclement Conditions.
This tarp can be set up with a minimum of two trekking poles (sticks or logs will work as well), six sections of cord, and six stakes. The most durable and wind-resistant setup would include two trekking poles, eight lengths of cord, and eight stakes. We recommend titanium stakes and spectra-based cordage to minimize weight and maximize strength.
Spinnaker cloth is noisier than silnylon. Flapping can be minimized, of course, by properly pitching the tarp. This requires practice, experience, and an understanding of how to distribute tension through the tarp's panels. With time, the spinnaker fabric will 'soften,' and the initial crispness of the fabric will be reduced along with the noise.
We do not warranty this tarp against fabric failure. We will warranty against manufacturing defects, including seam ripping, if the ripping was caused by a weakness in seam construction or thread, but not if the ripping was due to fabric failure. Ripping due to fabric failure indicated that the tarp was being used in a manner that exceeded its intended limits.
In the photos displayed on this page, the Backpacking Light Spinnaker Solo Tarp has been set up with trekking poles, guylines, line tensioners, and titanium stakes. These are not included with the tarp and need to be purchased separately.
