Montbell U.L. 90 Sleeping Pad on 07/12/2007 12:33:04 MDT Report Post Print

Rating: 5 / 5

This review is for the Montbell U.L. 90 sleeping pad.

The pad is very light at 9.9oz, and with Montbell's pillow, which I have also reviewed, a very comfortable pad and pillow can be had for under 13oz.

The pad is a comfortable sleeping cushion and just long enough for me(5'7") to not require an extension, however, I did add one. By cutting simple slits in a light yoga pad section, the toggles that Montbell uses helps the pads securely attach. The toggle system in general is very effective in securing the pad to the pillow and extension.

I have not used in it very cold conditions, so I can't speak to the insulation the pad provides.

Overall, I am very happy with the pad, and the system as a whole.

Sleep through the night on 07/19/2007 02:04:01 MDT Report Post Print

I own the 120cm version, but aside from the dimensions and weight, it is identical.
This pad is not remarkable on its own, but as part of the Montbell sleep system, it is.
The toggles mate with the MB pillow toggles to keep the pillow in position. Similar toggles at the other end can mate with a MB extension pad, or any other modified pad, to bring the total length to what you need, 180cm for me. Securing this all together allowed me to sleep through the night in a tent, for the first time ever.
The foam is solid, not waffle cut like some competitors. Since foam has a higher R value than air, This will result in a more insulating pad. (given the same thickness) I slept warmly on packed snow with only this pad, a 1/8" open cell foam sheet, and the silnylon tent floor.

Combined with the MB pillow, this is the lightest inflatable 150cm setup I can find in my research on the internet (at the time of this review).
It has an integral strap which holds it in the rolled up position; thus saving the weight of a stuff sack.(which is included along with a repair kit)
Highly recommended

Comfortable, lightweight, reasonable price on 07/21/2007 07:53:25 MDT Report Post Print

The pad is reasonably comfortable for its length, pretty non-skid and compresses well. I roll around a bit, so the width is nice at 20 inches. I combine mine with a 1/8 inch GG insulating pad cut down to go under the torso pad and a cut down GG torsolite pad for insulation under my feet and legs. This combination is both lightweight at around 13.5 ounces and warm down to 38 degrees (haven't used under colder temps yet). It does seem thinner than advertised, but this has not been a problem. It seems to be pretty durable, but this is my first year to use it. Overall, this pad has been a good buy. I would recommend it.

Works great as pack frame for GG Mariposa Plus on 04/23/2008 20:04:58 MDT Report Post Print

I just received the Montbell UL 90 pad & pillow today. It is about 6" longer than the GG closed cell foam pad I usually use. It fits perfectly, when folded into thirds, into the external sleeve of a GG Mariposa Plus pack. Simply insert it then inflate it slightly. I think this will provide more comfort & padding than the foam pad especially since I'm a tall big fellow. The pillow attachment to the pad is quite slick & further extends the overall length of the system. At 12.5 oz or so, it is exactly the same weight as my Pacific Outdoors pillow & GG torso pad. An equitable trade I think.

Montbell U.L. 90 Sleeping Pad weighs 9.5 oz. It provides ample comfort and the best feature is that it has a built in strap. The strap holds a stuff sack in place for a pillow and keeps it from wandering off. It also is used for storing the pad and so you don't need the stuff sack. Quality and construction is awesome. Another quality product from Mont Bell.
Used in conjuction with a GG 3/8 Thinlight 3/4 length and my Pinnacle pack under my legs on snow and felt no coldspots.

Excellent Modular Mat on 12/04/2008 12:28:01 MST Report Post Print

I bought the 90 to use in conjunction with the MB pillow to make what amounts to a 3/4 mat. When I use it in shoulder seasons and into winter, I add a GG Nightlight Torso to the bottom end by punching holes to match up with the MB toggles. As temperatures drop further, I place a length of GG 1/8" under the pillow and the 90 and I'm totally ready for the cold while still keeping the weight down to a minimum.
