Rating: 4 / 5

Purchased spring 2004.

The most comfortable hiking boot I've ever had--and that includes a pair of custom-made Limmers (25 years ago) that simply fit and never needed breaking in. (How could off-the-shelf boots be more comfortable than custom-made? Those Limmers, though they fit GREAT, are heavy. They were then, they are now. Moreover, with technology improvements, not just in boots but in socks, the Scarpas feel better on my feet.)

Though there are lighter shoes available (nominal 1240 grams, 2#12 for size 42), I wanted a higher ankle than trail runners or other low boots. Even with a light pack or just a hydration pack, I like the ankle support.

When I got these boots, I cared about three things: fit, waterproofing, and weight. Fit, actually, was the top five things on my list. I tried the Nike Air Zoom Tallac: nice and light, too narrow. I now forget all the boots I tried on, 'til I found these.

They're comfie. They're pretty light for a waterproof boot of this height (though I'd like lighter: that's why a 4 and not a 5 in my rating, and they'd be 4.5, I think, if I had that flexibility). They've lasted remarkably well.

I've read complaints about Gore-Tex boots being hot. I do not share that complaint.

I know many people who take a light pair of in-camp shoes. I don't: I just wear my Scarpas all the time, whether on trail or in camp. Besides saving weight, I just can't imagine something much more comfortable!
