Let’s face it: for non technical routes a light axe and a trekking pole usually are the best combination. However, aluminum headed axes deform with even light use, so if you expect some REAL use of the pick and / or the adze a steel headed axe is a better choice.
The BD Raven Ultra design is simple and functional: you get a tool that simply does the work it is intended to, no bells and whistles.
Both the head and the shaft have an ergonomic shape, so it is comfortable for prolonged use even in hard snow or ice. Placing and cleaning the axe is easy because the pick is designed to follow the swing of the arm. Another common task, cutting steps, is also easy, because the adze is (and remains) sharp.
The steel insert at the spike not only contributes to the durability of the axe, but helps the shaft to penetrate on hard snow. This increases security in the ascents and, specially, descents. However, on hard snow as the terrain gets stepper, the spike tends to slip downhill. This prevents the Raven Ultra to get a 5.

In short, the BD Raven Ultra is my choice for non technical routes where I expect a use that exceeds the limits of an aluminum headed axe.
