A member on here suggested I try something with picaridin, instead of the usual DEET-based sprays, out in the swamps. This past Saturday I was volunteering in the Everglades National Park to help with some trail maintenance, and I had been bug spray-free all day - until we moved to this one section where the mosquitoes seemed to have all been hiding.
I pulled out the pocket-sized spray pump of Repel Sportsmen Gear Smart (15% picaridin) and sprayed it on my clothes, then on my face I applied it by hand. Instant magic force-field! I don't think I felt another bite for the rest of the day. I was really impressed as DEET has never been this effective.
It was a warm day, lots of hard work and lots of sweating, plus humidity in the air from pending precipitation. I've yet to do a real hike while wearing this stuff, though, so it may be a bit premature to give it a 5. I'm keeping it at a 4 for now, and will try to report back again after a day of prolonged use.
