This is my 4 oz. (on my scale) trekking, kayak touring, and one of two sailing hats. It is a 5 because it has a headband on the inside that is soft and does not harden with sweat or saltwater. It has brass mesh, really tiny, in the eyelets to keep bugs out and let air in. Watership is one of the premier sailing hat companies, check out all their different geat at and this hat at:
This wonderful hat has sides that button up, but I never figured out why that was necessary so I never do it.
It has, perhaps most importantly, adjustments in the back, both velcro tabs and an adjustable cord, that will let you conform the shape to your head size AND/OR add a beanie or beanie and balaclava and still fit perfectly -- so that even in a wind it doesn't come off.
It is a sun shade and sunscreen rated at 50 whatever they ares. It has a darker colored underside of the brim so it doesn't reflect a lot of light back in your face from water or snow or whatever. It floats, in my experience. And, it is prety indestructable.
I have also put socks and junk in it and used it for a pillow, as well as a carrying sack when I am collecting something like berries or pine needles or pine cones and kindling. It has been used as a windscreen to get a fire going or for my Giga blaster. So all in all, it makes me happy and keeps the bright sun and rain or snow off -- with or w/o a beanie or other head covering.
Here are some pictures:
Adjustment tabs closed/adjusted.
Sides buttoned up.
Hat w/ MH beanie next to it, at a weird angle so the beanie looks bigger and the hat smaller by comparison than they are in reality.
They carry the hats online at West Marine, $47.99. See it at:
