The Fifth Season is in Mt. Shasta, northern California, right off of Hwy. I-5 in the downtown area. They have a web page at:
This shop is the place to go for info on Shasta and the area.
It is also the place to go for gear of all kinds. They carry skis, snowboards, repair stuff, rent stuff and sell it. They carry bikes, books, maps, and other such items. They carry a full line of hiking boots, low and high top, heavy and light, and have ortho pads to conform to your feet.
They have highly experienced people staffing the place and the owners seem to have used every piece of equipment they sell ... they put me in the best hiking boots, low and high top, I have ever used -- with foot pads that fit me. (I got my Atmos 50 there because I trusted them to fit it and make sure I had the righth pack for my body.)
They also carry packs, sleeping bags, cooking gear and stoves, and a full line of clothing.
And, they have the knife, compass, dark glasses or other gear you might have forgotten, lost or otherwise need.
The reason I am writing this review is twofold:
(1) there is no other equivalent shop I know of north of Redding on Interstate 5 unless it would be in Ashland Oregon and
(2) they accomplish all of the above is a corner store which is only a bit bigger than my living room and kitchen combined.
Pretty remarkable place, really. I think the information they give out freely, the assistance in getting just the right gear, being up on the latest materials and products, and overall fair pricing and friendliness is what makes it a stellar place to hunker down, get out of the weather, and think out what to do or buy.
Finally, they are very experienced in the entire area and will steer you to camping, hiking, and other opportunities that you wouldn't get if you didn't know where to go. If you're in that area then check them out.
Also, the Shasta-Trinity National Forest headquarters are in the same little town so you can load up on info and fire permits or wilderness permits at the headquarters.
