I have made windscreens out of a number of different materials, but I have yet to find anything better than Reynolds Wrap Aluminum Foil (or a generic version of it).
Why I love it:

  • It costs nothing
  • It can be found in every kitchen and restaurant in the world
  • It's easily disposable and replacable
  • It is very adjustable, and it keeps the shape that you put it in
  • It is lightweight, at just .3 oz for a 6" wrap that fits an Evernew .9L

Reynolds Wrap may not work with a cannister or white gas stove, which may burn too hot. I have only used it with my alcohol stove, which after about 10 meals will have burned through the foil in a few places too.

I typically use the Everew .9L Ti pot, along with the Ultimte Stove (made from a cat can). I nest the windscreen inside the pot during the day by folding it in half, which unlike other windscreens will not lead to fatigue and breakage along the fold.

To secure the windscreen around the pot and get a tight fit, which is tough if it's windy or if the ground is not level, I place sticks or rocks around the windscreen.

I have been using the same piece of Reynolds aluminum foil for a windscreen and a food prep area for about 6 months, maybe 8 now. It held up well and is light weight. It is important to get the heavy duty foil for a windscreen, IMO.

I folded a larger piece over itself and then refolded a thin edge around the piece which allows it to hold a stable shape and position. I've ebeen using the same piece of Reynold's Wrap now for the last month, approximately 15 meals.

The performance to weight ratio is superb. Like Mr. Skurka noted, replacing it would be easy, as aluminum foil is everywhere. For as light as it is, I'd just bring extra if you are out on an extended trip. I do this anyway, by making my windscreen with 4-6 layers, folded over from one piece. It's not as flimsy as a single layer piece, and when the inevitable "burn through" happens, just fold it over, and no hole.
