If you haven't tried Larabars yet, you should. They are so darn good. So it's not suprising that when Larabar decided to make the new Jocalat chocolate-based energy bar, they'd stick with only the purest Cocoa as their base. These bars are the real deal and as delicious as an energy bar can be.

Having eaten a lot of pure cocoa in Central America, when I first bit into the Jocolat bar I placed the flavor instantly- pure Mayan chocolate (in fact, these bars were first called Maya Bars before a copyright issue.) If you love REAL chocolate, you'll find these energy bars to be heaven. And besides that, they stay pliable when cold- MUCH better than a Snickers bar (although that's hardly a fair comparison- Jocalat bars are in a whole different class).

And look at the ingredients: Organic dates, organic almonds, organic walnuts, organic cocoa powder, organic cocoa mass, organic cashews. This is real food.

The bars are small but pack 190 calories into their 1.7 oz weight for a solid 112 calories per ounce. And unlike a candy bar, it's a good blend of protein, carbs, and fats (including fiber and good fats).

The only problem- I have to hide my box of Jocalat bars so I don't eat them in one sitting in front of the TV!

Recently I was sent an entire box of Larabars from the company, with every flavor in it. It had in it all the JOCALAT bars also. I love Larabars already, and the JOCALAT ones? Even more. The coffee flavor one is very good.
As noted in my review of Larabars, you do have to like the texture (nuts and fruit ground together) and that it is raw food. They are very filling, high in fiber and protein, and as a bonus for backpacking, not low in fat. I am waiting to try the chocolate ones out this coming summer, to see if the survive hot weather.
Adding in chocolate only made the bars better!

These are love 'em or hate 'em chocolate bars. I love them, but my kids hate them because they don't taste like typcial store bought chocolate bars. The bars are organic and vegan, so don't think you're getting a snickers bar taste (i.e. milk and sugar). Instead, like with a lot of vegan desserts, dates are a big part of the recipe, and they are an acquired taste for some. I happen to love dates and pure chocolate, so for me these are great. A big upside with these bars is that they don't melt the way a lot of chocolate bars do, so they keep well in your pack. I generally bring one for each day I'll be out as a dessert before climbing in the sleeping bag. They seem to be pretty widely available (e.g. Trader Joe's and Whole Foods). Overall, I highly recommend them, but I realize they won't be for everybody.
