All 3 varieties of Big Sur Bars are delicious. They taste like a soft, healthy cookie and remain soft when the temp drops (although like all bars they will freeze).

They also pack 680 calories into a 5 oz bar for a very good 136 calories per ounce.

The downside to this caloric density is that they're so good, you'll want to eat the whole bar. Watch out though because 680 calories in one sitting equals a very full stomach!

The only real downside to a Big Sur Bar is that they'll only keep for a couple of weeks outside of the freezer. Of course, this is a result of Big Sur not using a lot of preservatives (a real bonus) but this does limit their usefulness on extended hikes.

Still, with an all natural ingredient list like this, I'm willing to make a few small compromises:
Oats, flour, almonds, pecans, raisins, coconut, semi-sweet chocolate chips, brown sugar, granulated sugar, butter, eggs, honey, vanilla, baking soda, baking powder.

A big 5 for Big Sur Bars!

Big Sur bars taste GREAT! They taste more like a cookee than an energy bar so they taste better then any energy bar I've had before however I'm not sure if they 'power' you as good as an energy bar would..I just don't know enough about what goes into energy bars to say. I do recomend them though and they are very filling, which is a hugh plus. I don't get
tried of them eather!

Discovered these in late 2005, and have used them pretty exclusivley ever since. Agree with all comments above. These tend to be my main source of calories during the time after breakfast and into early afternoon. When I eat half around 10 and the other half around 1, I never get hungry and the energy provided is constant.

Can't say much more about these. Very tasty and much more cost efficient ($/gram) than LARA bars--my previous favorite.

Pros: Entire meal in one bar, better calories per $ than most other bars, tasty

Cons: Not sold at BPL

I've really gotten into these bars in the last year or so. Recently used them for breakfast (1 bar) and dessert (1 bar) on a thruhike as they have a good calorie/oz ratio and are tastier than any other energy bars out there. Only one downside--after several hundred miles, I couldn't handle the orange zest anymore. But the originals never illicit my gag reflex--that's saying a lot coming from me on a thruhike, all food loses its' luster after awhile.
