They don't have free shipping. I get charged some sales tax (Colorado). But once in a while they have some great web specials. I've ordered from them a few times and never have had problems.

Patagonia is my bell weather for gear. I am looking into wool base layers and they didn't have one in stock in the color I wanted (eyes geting older means red or yellow is better for finding gear at dusk or night, and not leaving it behind). When I clicked on the place an order or buy button a pop up said to call their 800 number to see if there was one in stock at a store location rather than the Internet stockroom.

I called, they answered, in a minute they told me they would take the order over the phone, have it drop shipped from the store on the next business day and it would be to me within 2-3 business days.

On top of that, the Patagonia assistant on the phone had just done the PCT this last summer, knew all the UL gear stuff I needed to find out about and knew the area I live in. He turned me on to a product which he said would be as good or better than the merino wool top for what I needed in this area, especially in the summer -- since we have a range of highs through the year from 40 to 100+ F.

And, next time he comes through on the PCT he is gonna stop in and say hello, get a shower, etc. because the Post Office and PCT crossing is just a mile from our house it turns out.

Finally, he uses BPL for info and referred me to the BPL site, before he knew I was a member of the site. Cool.

My R1 hoody stitching started to fall apart and they took back the old one and sent me a brand new one.

I also had a rip in my micropuff vest when my waist cinch cord ripped out. Again, no problems and they sent me a new one in the mail.

Patagonia has been the maker of my most-used outdoor (and casual) garments, and I couldn't be happier with them. I have been extremely pleased with what I have bought from them and have always been assisted by their friendly and helpful staff.

Most importantly, however, is the way that they do business. While they are obviously out to make money (of course), they do have ethics in a day when many companies do not. The way they think of their impact on the environment has always amazed me. They aren't afraid to critique themselves and want to improve how they make their products and what they make them from. While other companies are becoming interested in being "green," Patagonia has been for years and is still leading the way.

In addition, I have also been impressed with their stand on overseas labor. Their foreign factories are inspected often, and their workers are paid a better wage (and given better treatment) than most. They are also a major member of a group (the name I can't remember) which tries to keep workers safe around the world. This, in addition to, 1% for the Planet is a great example of trying to make the world a better place and not just making clothes.

While Patagonia garments are quite expensive, I don't mind it. One can find most of their pieces for big discounts online. However, if I have to pay the full price, at least I know that the money is going to a company with a soul-a soul that cares more about the environment and its people than any that I know of out there. This matters to me.

Everything I've ever purchased from Patagonia has been high quality and functional, and I've been buying for years and years. On the few occasions when I've had a question or a problem, Customer Service has been easy to contact (a real person who has authority to act) and easy to deal with (usually a no-questions-asked return allowed). Yes, it's expensive, but its clothing lasts and lasts and it's worth a premium to know I've bought something that will perform as advertised. Besides, the company is large enough and fashion-conscious enough that last season's colors and models are easy to find on sale. Top marks!

I have always been a fan of Patagonia even before I started backpacking. Not all there products are light weight but some are like there Capilene tops and bottoms, R1 and rain pants which I think are great to hike in and fill great on the skin. They also have liner gloves and a few lightweight jackets. I really enjoy getting there catalogues in the mail. There customer service is first rate and they have a excellent recycling program. Great company, great products and good customer service. I also like there 1% of profits back to good earth causes. "High Five"
