I've been dealing with REI for a few years now. I'm really satisfied with the company. Their prices are not the lowest. They do not price match. Become a member. It pays for itself over and over and over again. With membership, you gain access to 10% back on all regular priced items, 20% discount coupons and other discounts/promotions. Well worth it. The best part about doing business with REI is the fact that you can take something back if it breaks or just doesn't work out for you.... no questions asked. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable for the most part. What more can you ask for from a company?

I have been a member of REI for over 15 years...I purchased a REI Bivy sack over year and half ago -I never used it--just in the backyard to test it out..Anyways I returned yesterday-- the customer service person ask one question: " Why are you returning it? I said -I will never use it....Done deel!!! I got $94.00 instant instore credit-SWEET!!!!! I really like REI and it seems they are slowly but surely understanding UL.

After my wife and I got married, we were having a conversation about going backpacking (and getting some gear). I had been brought up on REI, she had been brought up spending the least amount of money possible to make a purchase. She wanted to show me the great bargains at some Mart store of some sort. I asked the sales associate to get out one of the sleeping bags so that I could try it out and see how it feels (fully knowing the reaction I would get). As I expected, I was rebuffed, and saked if I was kidding.

I took my wife to REI. The sales person asked her to try three different sleeping bags. Then try them with pads/air mattresses. Then try them with a winter layer. That was 4 years ago. The equipment we bought has served her well. My wife is starting to understand that spending less at the time of purchase does NOT mean that you saved money. Especially when part of the purchase was a damaged (actual manufacture defect) pack that had to be returned. She was positive there was no way they'd exchange it. I'm thankful REI proved her wrong.

The title says "Customer service" not gear selection. So yes 5/5. Now gear selection? They can't have ultralight gear as most people would destroy them and then return them. The "comfort" of ultralight gear is also not the best obviously and people would end up returning them as well.

REI offers superb customer service and truly believes in customer satisfaction. You can return items at any time for whatever reason no questions asked. Sales personnel are extremely familiar with all of their products and can discuss these in depth. My wife was able to try out 3 different sleeping bags and pads. We tried out backpacks, bought one each, and had them adjusted professionally by a tech specialist. They carry a great variety of diverse products for the outdoor enthusiast. If an item is not in stock, you can order it and not pay shipping. I gave them a four because they tend to be expensive and do not match prices. Their rationale for this is that they provide exceptional service, have an outstanding return policy, and return monry to club members via dividends generated from items purchased at their stores. Highly recommended.
