Caffeine pills are OTC and totally legal. And a lot cheaper than the myriad of caffeine energy foods being marketed to backpackers, triathletes and other endurance oriented folks.

Caffine pills are simple, lightweight, cheap, require no cooking or preparation and they work. They energize you, increase concentration for a few hours and generally are superior to "Jolt" and other caffine sports energy foods.

A particular potent combination I have come up with on my own is the following:

1)caffeine pill
2) 400 mg ibuprofren (Motrin) You can also use an extra strength aspirin like Bufferin.
3) packet of Car-boom! or other fast energy gel or hard candy.

Take them together, wash down with water and you will be like a lizard on the trail for several hours, not feel much if any pain either.

I swallowed NoDoze by the box as a teenager driving a combine 13 hours a night harvesting green peas in the Pacific Northwest (Skagit Valley). I washed them down with coffee. There is nothing more sleep inducing than a Ford 5000 tractor putting along at 1.5 miles per hour, and NoDoze didn't stop me from falling asleep, nor did it give me "lizard " energy. Instead it raised my tolerance threshold to a dangerous level, effectively poisoning me without any energy benefit.
