Let's start with the positives: Fact: These taste better than traditional powdered eggs from 1965 where you had to mix water with and stir the lumps out, then cook them in a pan, wondering if what you got was really egg based.

On the other side:
Rumor has it that you can be arrested for a-salt in some jurisdictions for serving this meal <(:-() (just kidding, but...)

If you want your next meal to tase wonderful, try this one first, as IMHO, this one just doesn't cut it. The amount of cholesterol and sodium packed in this package must qualify for some industry prize, and it wouldn't surprise me if the public sale of a few cases of this is enough to raise average share price of Crestors' parent company by 5%.

(OK, most of this is a parody, but I really didn't like the taste, sodium or cholesterol) I think if you really want bacon and eggs on a backpack trip, you're going to have to take the real thing refrigerated, tolerate the Cholesterol and Sodium, recalibrate your taste buds, or get better medical coverage :)

MH eggs + bacon, I love it. on 12/20/2006 21:22:02 MST Report Post Print

My only beef with Mountain House is the price, or my only beef next to the fact I feel like a "yuppie" eating the stuff.

But, I love the taste compared to the junk I used to eat when I tried to go light decades ago. It is easy to get up, watch the sunlight on a lake or mountain side, push the button on the SP Giga, and eat breakfast.

The MH eggs and bacon is great if you let it simmer long enough AND make sure to stir it well in the beginning AND pour out the extra water along towards the end of when it is simmering.

That said, my partner hates it, she carries way more weight than me as well because she likes more amenities ... I guess she has never eaten Boy Scout dried egg breakfasts which by comparison when I was younger, much younger, were cooked in bulk and basically good for poisoning fish so they will come to the surface -- or at least that is the way it was in the 1950s at Echo Lake in the High Sierras.

For me the convenience, the taste, and the texture if you handle it right is a real 5.

Price is an issue with all commercial pre-packaged freeze dried meals. But what the heck, you can't take it with you and I love the smell of eggs and bacon in the morning (ducking from incoming out of my partner's office room).

When I decide to pack a hot breakfast I usually either pick up the MH eggs with bacon or ham and peppers. As one reviewer suggested, pour out the water before consuming. I usually prepare this dish as a burrito, bringing tortillas, shredded cheddar, and Jalepeno salsa from Chik-Fila for a little kick. I actually had thru hikers drooling in the 100 mile wilderness (ok, I'll admit that's not all that difficult.). Quick and tasty.

That which doesn't kill me ... on 10/03/2009 11:45:20 MDT Report Post Print

Didn't give this the lowest rating because I lived to tell about it. Gaaack! I bought a couple of these for a mid 50 miler treat after watching a rave video review by a certain cantankerous pontificating Maine stove maker.

That poor boy! What he must have been raised on would probably have gotten his parents arrested if MH eggs and bacon taste good by comparison.

After three days of hard hiking I was hungry, but I couldn't finish it. The eggs were spongy, and tasted like a sponge only not quite as good due to a mediciny after taste. I remember seeing bits of bacon (if that's what it was) but I don't recall much bacon flavor.

Add in the high MH price and this is an insult meal. If this had been my first experience with MH, I would have been too grossly offended to ever try another.

After a hard 12 mile scramble up and down the GA AT south of Woody Gap, I was sooooh pleased with the MH scrambled eggs & bacon that I made a journal entry "Bowl liken Goood". Which of course is just my humble opinion and what can you expect from a beanie weenie lover !

Terrible Mouthfeel on 10/03/2009 18:21:43 MDT Report Post Print

Rating: 1 / 5

I tried these several years ago when they first came out - no bacon in them then. They were horrible! Like a previous reviewer said, virtually flavorless yellow sponges.

Last year I noticed they had added bacon and red and green peppers. Figured I'd try them again and see if they'd changed. Well, the flavor was a bit better, but the texture was still like a wet sponge. Trying to pour off the unabsorbed water makes a big mess, and you'll never get it all out. The stuff has a mouthfeel like cottage cheese curd, although not as soft.

NEVER AGAIN!

Edible, for some people on 07/01/2011 11:38:46 MDT Report Post Print

1.5 Star Rating.

I'm planning a backpacking trip so I decided to try these at home first. I poured out most of the water but the eggs were still watery. Little bits of egg were rubbing off and the egg pieces that were left did not have much taste and the texture was soft and "gross". I poured a lot of hot sauce on them and ate most of the bag. My girlfriend was willing to wait for me to make her real scrambled eggs.

Add mashed potatoes on 03/29/2012 21:59:13 MDT Report Post Print

These are edible if you mix them with instant mashed potatoes (like Idahoan four cheese). The potatoes absorb any excess water, and I can hardly taste the eggs (which is good), and it is a more enjoyable texture to me.
