I've been using titanium shepherd hook stakes for years now -- loving their ultralight weight but disappointed with their suboptimal ground penetration and holding power. These stakes can be bent all too easily.
Starting last year, for normal 3-season use, I've been very pleased with Big Sky's Ultra C aluminum tent stakes -- which come in two lengths -- 4" and 6".
What I like about them as compared to titanium shepherd hooks:
1. Better ground penetration (i.e. easier to insert, harder to get bent).
2. Better ground holding because of its shape and much greater surface area.
3. Shiny bronze color makes them harder to lose.
4. Comparable weight -- just 0.23oz. for the four inch and 0.25oz for the six inch.
For all the conditions where titanium shepherd hook stakes are appropriate -- and then some -- the Big Sky stakes are a superior alternative in my opinion.
