I had originally ordered the standard 9.5' long model, but found it a little too long in poncho-mode. The front provided coverage to the tops of my shoes, which might be ideal for some people, but I prefer shorter for use w/ softshell pants or wp chaps (I’m 5’9”). Also I like 8.5’ long tarps anyway. So I asked Ron to make one 8.5’ long rather than 9.5’, and with no rear pole or pole attachments for utlimate simplicity. This is now my favorite of any poncho tarp I’ve seen, and well worth the wait. Mine fits me to just below the knee, with much better arm coverage than other ponchos (ie- also more width in tarp mode), and a really nice brimmed hood. Actually the front length is adjustable with some creative waistcord use. Cinching it up higher, I occassionally like the mobility of above-knee length on tricky terrain. These adjustments are easy to make on the go. Plenty of tieouts and interior loops make for a stable and very livable shelter. Good stitching and reinforcements, nice details -- no foreseeable durability or workmanship concerns.
At all times Ron’s customer service was on point, exceeding what I’ve experienced with a few other made-to-order gear shops. He was always prompt, and committed to getting me a product that I was happy with. I'm looking forward to seeing MLD’s new designs, and I'd gladly order from them again.
