I had originally ordered the standard 9.5' long model, but found it a little too long in poncho-mode. The front provided coverage to the tops of my shoes, which might be ideal for some people, but I prefer shorter for use w/ softshell pants or wp chaps (I’m 5’9”). Also I like 8.5’ long tarps anyway. So I asked Ron to make one 8.5’ long rather than 9.5’, and with no rear pole or pole attachments for utlimate simplicity. This is now my favorite of any poncho tarp I’ve seen, and well worth the wait. Mine fits me to just below the knee, with much better arm coverage than other ponchos (ie- also more width in tarp mode), and a really nice brimmed hood. Actually the front length is adjustable with some creative waistcord use. Cinching it up higher, I occassionally like the mobility of above-knee length on tricky terrain. These adjustments are easy to make on the go. Plenty of tieouts and interior loops make for a stable and very livable shelter. Good stitching and reinforcements, nice details -- no foreseeable durability or workmanship concerns.

At all times Ron’s customer service was on point, exceeding what I’ve experienced with a few other made-to-order gear shops. He was always prompt, and committed to getting me a product that I was happy with. I'm looking forward to seeing MLD’s new designs, and I'd gladly order from them again.

This is my favorite piece of gear. I use it as a "cooking shelter" while I'm hammock camping in griz country. I've also used it in combination with a bivy. My version is 8 feet 6 inches long. I've been through two big rains and strong winds with no problems. The cat cut proved valuable in that the tarp stayed tightly pitched with no audible flapping in strong winds. There is enough room under the tarp for two men and most our gear to sit up and make dinner out of the rain.

Design and craftsmanship are excellent.

I've used this poncho-tarp extensively as a tarp on windy, rainy, snowy nights. It works great and is large enough to be completely effective as a shelter, really - it's more than adequate.

My challenge with it are the guylines/strings. If I leave them on, I'd trip over them in poncho mode. If I remove them, then I can't quickly transition from poncho to shelter in the rain. If I neatly tie them up, that's too time consuming for my tastes. This is a problem with the poncho tarp concept for me rather than a ding on this particular poncho-tarp.

I'd also like to mention that as with all MLD gear, construction is outstanding and Ron's service is outstanding.

This is an excellent tarp that can function as a poncho if needed.
