GSI Dualist on 06/27/2009 15:50:13 MDT Report Post Print

This is a very cool system. It's not titanium, but it's still very light for what you get. Also, the price is right at around 30-40 bucks. There are two models, the dualist and the soloist. I went with the dualist because it comes with 2 bowls, 2 insulated mugs, and 2 lids. Everything nests inside of eachother with enough room to store an 8 oz canister of fuel and a small stove like the pocket rocket. It's perfect for 2-3 people and the pot size is perfect. If I'm doing more of a solo trip, I usually take just one bowl instead of all of them (which is all the soloist is anyway). I usually don't use the insulated mugs because I have a snowpeak titanium mug I use for beverages instead, but they work great as bowls. The lid snaps on the insulated mug and is perfect for keeping food warm if you are not going to eat it right away.

The lid is clear plastic with strainer holes built in to one side. I like the clear plastic because you can see when your liquid comes to a boil rather than constantly checking (loosing the heat out of the pot) or over boiling (and wasting fuel).

The only con I can think of is the pot is just a little too big to use with the pocket rocket, which is why I've made this my primary cook system for my MSR whisperlite international. The whisperlite nests in the cooksystem perfectly if I only take one bowl.

GSI makes the same dualist and soloist in a "pinnacle" edition now which is smaller and lighter that the original dualist and soloist.

So while it's not as lightweight as it's titanium competitors, it still remains one of my favorite cook systems and you can't beat it for the price!
