This book is rad. Took it on a NOLS backcountry ski course and pretty much found that we did virtually all the cool tips in this book for 12 days and were not even close to getting uncomfortable. I really enjoyed their tips regarding shelters and cooking especially, the comprehensive gear list in the back, and attention to winter hazards right off the bat, a testament to how well organized I think the book is. Its also very entertaining, and looking at Mike's pictures makes me want to bolt off and go into debt getting my own free heeled bliss.

Pretty much the bible when it comes to winter backcountry travel and camping, and not just on skis. Knowledgeable, interesting, humorous and Mike's illustrations are cute and technically astute.

I bought this book because I went to Norway for 8 months with plenty of snow and cold. Just a bit of skiing, but also just snowshoeiing and hiking.
Expecting just some extra tips and tricks, I was astonished how different wintercamping skills were instead of just summercamping. With a lot of simple tricks(like snow underneath your pan will put off the stove) it helps you enjoy your first outings instead of it being miserable or hard because of the quick learning of all those small mistakes(safer too!). It also teaches less obvious lessons, like snowcave building and skiing. The illustrations equals more than 1000 words!
This book covers more than expected and is really helpful if you are new to camping in a lot of snow with temp < -5C. Really worth the money, actually quite cheap!

"Allen & Mike's Really Cool Backcountry Ski Book" is the very best book on teh eop I have ever read - and I've read most of them in the last 40 years of backcountry skiing and camping. (I'm a geezer, former Nordic patroller and Army ROTC winter survival instructor.)

Fully 50% of the info is in the cartoon illustrations by Mike. The illustrations make the info stick in your mind.

There is an updated edition out now.
