Six Moon Designs Refuge "X" on 05/11/2008 20:07:08 MDT Report Post Print

I have used the Refuge X on a three day trip to the UP in Michigan. Temperatures overnight were between 30-40F and there was no rain or significant wind.
I received the tent at a weight of 15.8 oz, and it included a small booklet with set-up directions.
We did not seam-seal it due to lack of time and expected fair weather conditions. Setup of the tent was easy though one had to make six guylines (spectra cord included with tent) which made the first setup last a bit longer. The instructions also mentioned "loosening the corner adjustment webbing" which was confusing since there was nothing to adjust (there are fixed loops to which you tie the guylines). I staked the four corners loosely before positioning and adjusting both poles. I then re-staked/tensioned the four corner stakes. Overall setup was very easy and the walls were taut, even without extra guylines on both side walls. One hour after the initial setup I re-tensioned/re-staked. In the morning, the tent seemed to still be fairly taut.
Folding and putting it back into the storage bag was very easy.
The tent is very roomy, especially lengthwise and heightwise at the center. My girlfriend and I had enough space at our feet to easily store our packs. We kept our shoes in the vestibule. Entry and exit were as easy as could be expected (meaning fairly) given the pole in front of the entrance. Compared to tents who have one or two poles positioned vertically, exit/entrance was made easier by having the pole positioned at an angle (see pics).
Since there were neither rain, nor wind, we could not evaluate its performance in those domains. Condensation was fairly heavy (especially over our heads due to our breathing) and needed to be wiped off to avoid water dripping on the sleeping bags. This was not any different from previous single wall tents we had used.

Overall: Great and extremely light tent with lots of promise. Needs to be evaluated in more diverse conditions. As a two-person tent it is roomy enough. Will provide additional info in the near future.
