Leatherman Juice S2 Multitool on 08/25/2005 19:16:59 MDT Report Post Print

Rating: 4 / 5

At 4.3oz the Juice S2 isn't exactly ultralight. But, it strikes a good balance between weight and functionality without moving up to the 8-10oz everything and the kitchen sink heavy weights.

I'm a backpacking fisherman and prefer a tool centered around a useful pliers like the Leatherman vs the Swiss Army type tools where the pliers are a useless afterthought. In addition to the pliers/cutter, the tool has: scissors, 3 blade screwdrivers, 1 phillips, can/bottle opener and a 2.5" knife.

I've had the tool for 6mo now, it's durable and well made. When unfolded, the pliers snap into place positiveley. The tips align precisely, the action is smooth, bordering on tight. The pliers have worked well for removing fish hooks, straightening barbs and lifting my solo pot when the handles are a bit hot. The scissors blades are serrated near the tip to grip the article you are cutting. The scissors blades fit closely and have a fair amount of cutting power for their small size. I mainly use them for trimming line ends after tying flies. One minor drawback to the scissors is that the handle sometimes becomes misaligned from its spring loaded return arm. Easily fixed with a gentle push before using. Blade screwdrivers are in 3 sizes, phillips on the small side for size, all fairly durable though. Bottle/can opener is a bit flimsy. I used it to perforate an empty canister stove fuel cylinder, before crushing for packout. It bent slightly, did bend back though. I found the pliers work much better for this task now.

I got this with my REI dividend, normal cost is $45. I give it 4/5 as it is a good value compared to other tools of it's type - it's hard to get a pliers and scissors combo cheap. It would be nice if the tools locked in place like the similarly equipped Gerber Compact Sport, but that weighs in at 6oz. A small saw would be nice too, for cutting firewood you cant break by hand or foot. Leatherman offers that in the 5.5oz Juice CS4 - that'll hve to wait 'til next dividend!
