Fairydown 170gsm long sleeve T on 10/28/2007 04:28:22 MDT Report Post Print

As has been posted previously - 100% merino wool at 17 micron or less -rocks. soft comfortable performance that doen't smell etc...

drawbacks... weight... In my size my Icebreaker 190gsm long sleeve T is a whopping 251g (8.8oz). Even my Icebreaker 150gsm short sleeve T is a hefty 162g (5.7oz).

But wait! Salvation may be at hand! On a recent trip to Bhutan I was asked to test a new merino wool long sleeve T by a company called Fairydown. If you are a Kiwi you'll know Fairydown as the upmarket outdoor supplier who sponsored Hillary on the first successful summit of Everest. They are looking at doing a few new things and one them is Merino wool clothing.

The Fairydown 170gsm long sleeve T comes in at 176g (6.19oz). This is a very similiar weight to my synthetic tops.

It was a tremendous thing to look forward to after a long day trekking - soft, comfortable, warm and no smell even after 13 days of no showers... all my high end wool products have been tremendous as long as you keep the camphor up to keep the moths at bay. This is no exception. Great product in a lighter weight.

I use the wet and dry system of clothing. Wet is day time clothing. Dry is what I wear around camp and in the bag. This does two things comfort - no sticky body feeling, a little extra warmth and also to stop the days grime getting into my fragile high loft down. In Bhutan I used a Fairydown wool beanie at 38g (1.33oz), the Fairydown 170gsm long sleeve T at 176g (6.19oz), an Icebreaker wool long johns at 190g (6.69oz) and a pair of coolmax socks.

ok new news... a website will be up next April to compliment the 2 current stores in New Zealand.

Caveat... I was given this stuff to test and didnt pay for it. The exchange was however pictures and a story for them - nothing to do with BPL.
