Overview:

PossumDown socks are more compressible and offer as much loft than an equivalent weight fleece, while providing better temperature regulation in damp conditions. That means when conditions go south and you are forced to go to bed with wet and/or cold feet, you need to retain as much heat as possible, not lose it to evaporative cooling (as occurs rapidly with synthetic socks). PossumDown socks will keep your feet warmer, feeling drier, and just plain feel cozier next to skin. Don't believe us? Soak your socks in a bucket of ice water, wring them out, and then wear a PossumDown Sock on one foot, and a lightweight fleece sock on the other for a night in a sleeping bag out in your backyard this winter. Guess which footie is going to be warmer?

I don't recommend these socks as hiking socks. The PossumDown knit we have specified is not durable enough for long distance hiking. These are intended to replace fleece socks for sleeping, and if needed, they will provide you with cold weather hiking comfort if you need them periodically.

Why PossumDown?

PossumDown is a very unique fiber blend, and we've specified a very specific type of knit in our PossumDown garments. The fiber blend is important to consider - the possum fur provides loft not normally found in wool garments at this weight, the merino wool provides great next to skin comfort and temperature regulation, and a very small amount of nylon provides durability. The knit construction is great for trapping warmth, dries quicker than woolen felts and wovens, and breathes exceptionally well. Bottom Line: PossumDown has a higher performance-to-weight ratio (with respect to loft and comfort/temperature regulation) of any natural fiber blend we've tried. It truly bridges the gap between thin base layers that provide little insulating ability to thicker insulating fleeces and synthetics that are too hot for exertion in cool conditions.
