Kids, especially the littlest ones, are not likely to sit and contemplate nature's majesty in reverent silence. And, yes, there are all kinds of natural "toys" kids can discover around camp. But another option (in the right setting) is to pack in lightweight percussion instruments so the whole family can make music together. Drum circles have been long practiced by native peoples and are popular today as a way to create community, release tension and tune into the natural rhythms of life.
Remo has been making innovations in drum technology for nearly 50 years. Their children's drum sets include the Sound Shapes which are flat frames in basic geometrical shapes with weather resistant Mylar heads. They are light weight and fun to play. Remo reps John and Robert with guest musician, Jeff, create a great sound from two small circle Sound Shapes and a simple rattle made of a plastic egg and filler.
Drumming and backpacking did not seem to go together to me at first. I often hike solo and savor the silence in camp. However this fall, I'll be introducing my two year old niece to the sport. We'll be much nearer the front than the back country when we camp and I imagine the general level of noise - from both hilarity and self assertion - will be as loud as any drumming we do. And the drumming might even be more pleasant.

Carol, this was a really neat podcast. I loved hearing something more melodic than the NOISE OF MARKETING on the show floor!

We discovered this a few years ago and it is great to take hiking and camping. I have 4 kids and we can get the drumming going and the dancing starts, it is a lot of fun... I never thought I would end up a 'drum circle' kind of person. But it is a blast!!!
Love the pod cast. I am taking my 8 and 11 year old boys on their first long distance hike this weekend. It should be a fun 34 miles.
Thank you again Carol!!!
