The inaugural Backpacking Light Wilderness Trekking 3 course was held in October in the mountains on the Montana/Wyoming border. Weather is notoriously unpredictable then and participants' gear was strictly limited. Inclement weather, high altitude, travel through mountain terrain and minimal gear were all factors contributing to the degree of difficulty and the learning opportunities in this course. One unexpected factor that was hugely responsible for group success or failure was group dynamics.

Hi there,

I was one of the very privilaged folks to be on the trekking expedition described in the podcast. It was a super cool experience. And, there was a lot going on to create a more demanding set of challenges. Ryan set it up so we were FORCED to deal with things that "almost" never would happen in a "normal" expedition.

It feels like all of came away with our ability to deal with the unforseen bumped up a notch or two...

peace,
M!

Hey Bill - there is one download link per podcast, displayed at the top and bottom of the page. Some podcast articles have more than one paragraph, so it's nice to be able to click without extra scrolling.

I know that this has been mentioned before, but the volume of the first podcast is really low. Carol came through OK, but it was really hard to hear Ryan. I understand that some of the problem is probably my sound system (or lack thereof).

Part 4 is not Ryan Jordan's wrap-up. on 01/10/2008 12:00:05 MST

Just an FYI--

This page identifies the fourth podcast in the series as "Interview with Ryan Jordan - Wrapping it Up" -- it's actually Carol's interview with Don Wilson.

Re: Gear List on 01/10/2008 16:27:39 MST

You know, I have difficulty viewing this gear list which is posted as a jpeg at Ryan's website. Maybe someone here has a suggestion that can help me actually access the list.

When I click on the image as instructed, the pop-up screen shows only about the top 2/3's of the list. There's no scrolling feature available in the window that's opened for the jpeg, so can't see the bottom 1/3 by scrolling.

Also tried zooming out with the "view" option to get the entire list in the pop-up window, but then the print shrinks too small to read. If my pet flea could read and talk, I suppose I could have it describe the gear to me.

Even tried copying the jpeg to a word document with the idea that I could then manipulate the image to a size that my aging eyes could read. No luck. Just got a very fuzzy image that makes me think my glasses have really fogged up.

I'm sure the list is great, but it's worse than worthless if it can't be read. Help!

Gear List Viewing on 01/10/2008 17:22:42 MST

I have the same problem viewing it on my computer, but I can see the entire list when I single "click" it on my iPhone. Not to rub it in, but there is some great information in the cut out part. Unfortunately, I can't copy & paste from the phone, or I'd email it to you.

I posted that as a comment but it didn't show up or the post was blown off. Are you on a mac? If you right click and put it in a real browser window it will give you a scroll, or it did for me.

Sorry for any trouble you are having downloading Ryan's gear list. Just FYI, we will shortly be publishing the gear lists of all ten course participants, along with some comments and feedback on gear and techniques.
