After our headlamp review last year, we went on a search for the highest quality micro sized LED light we could find. After testing more than 15 different brands and 25 different 1-LED lights, we finally came to the conclusion that the new Photon Freedom Micro LED Light is about the best there is in terms of features, brightness, battery life, and ease of use.
A significant improvement over previous Photon Micro Lights (Models 2 and 3), the Photon Freedom Micro offers more features and better performance, a better switch, and is easier to use than most of the other one-LED lights we tested. In addition, when attached to a hat brim with a Velcro dot or affixed to a hands-free multi-purpose clip, the Photon Freedom Micro makes a terrific headlight for night hiking, camp chores, fly fishing at dusk, etc.
We found the water resistant housing to be just fine while wearing the headlamp on a rain jacket hood brim at night during several hours of extended rain, and wouldn't expect it to fail as a result of water entry unless it was submerged for a long time. So, of course, we tried that, and yes, after several minutes, the light went out. Then, we put it in our pocket for the rest of the day, and by nightfall, it was shining bright again.
Note: our Photon Freedom Micro LED Lights are supplied as OEM units (no packaging), but they do include a keychain clip and split ring.
Important: You must take your Photon Freedom out of Demonstration Mode by pressing and holding until the light turns off (at least 20 seconds).
To turn ON your new Photon Freedom - simply press and release. To turn OFF your new Photon Freedom - simply press and release.
When your Freedom is off, press and hold; the light will go from dim to full brightness. Release at the desired level of brightness. The light will blink when it reaches full brightness. (If you continue to press and hold, the Freedom will go to the Safety Beacons.)
When your Freedom is on, press and hold; the light will go from full brightness to dim. Release hold at the desired level of brightness. The light will blink when it reaches the lowest brightness. (If you continue to press and hold, the Freedom will go to the Safety Beacons.)
Brightness Control uses Pulse Width Modulation or PMW. The internal microcircuit pulses the LED on and off at a variable frequency turning the light on and off very rapidly. (It is not visible by the naked eye. This rapid on/off and variable pulse creates the different values of brightness.)
Press and Hold to select any of the 4 Safety Beacon Features.
(When in Slow, Medium, Fast or S.O.S., you can press and hold for the next safety beacon as they cycle circularly)
For the expert user, S.O.S. can be accessed as the first choice once the light blinks at full brightness by quickly releasing hold at the very first beacon flash. To exit, press and release at any time.
Rapidly turn on and off your light until your light won't stay on when you release your hold (4 times). Your Freedom now works like a squeeze only light. Use for signaling, Morse Code, battery life extension (Light will not stay on in your pocket when bumped). To exit Signal/Morse Code, press and hold until your Freedom turns off.
Two CR2016 Lithium Batteries are required for Green, Turquoise, Blue, Purple, UV, or White LED models (10 to 12 hours run time).
One CR2032 Lithium Battery is required for Red, Orange, Yellow, or Infrared LED models (yields up to 120 hours run time).
