Last year, Perseverance Mills (manufacturer of the Pertex textile brand) filed bankruptcy, ending a long reign of performance fabric manufacturing in the UK and leaving doubts about the future viability of Pertex fabrics of interest to manufacturers of lightweight soft goods made with Pertex Quantum, Microlight, Endurance, and others.

A sunset technology buyout came from Mitsui of Japan, who manufactures eVENT for GE/BHA technologies. Pertex is now a wholly owned technology of Mitsui, who also assumes marketing responsibility for the brand. All Pertex fabrics will remain in Mitsui's camp, including Equilibrium, Equilibrium Stretch, Endurance, Classic, Microlight, Quantum, Blue, and the DWR technology Shield.

Today I visited with Pertex/Mitsui and enjoyed a comprehensive look at the current line of fabrics, and most specifically, Quantum, the 20 denier, 30 g/m2 DWR-finished nylon that took the ultralight soft goods market by storm a few years ago.

Quantum remains in the line without spec changes but new styles with different ripstop patterns provide some aesthetic divergence from traditional (and remaining) plain weave and 1/8" ripstops.

Like Quantum, the Quantum Endurance product line (Quantum with a highly water-resistant PU coating) expands with different weave patterns.

The more exciting news from Pertex is their move towards 15 denier yarns in the new Quantum 15, which will also be available as Quantum 15 Endurance. Plus, breaking off from the Endurance family will be the new Endurance SP, a truly waterproof-breathable laminate, available in both 2- and 3-layer versions with options that are bonded to both Quantum 20d and Quantum 15.

Leveraging Mitsui's experience in waterproof breathable fabric manufacturing with Pertex microfiber technology should prove to be a lasting marriage offering highly competitive products with new innovations in the years to come.
