The lightweight hiker is well-tuned into the benefits of collapsible hydration bladders and water bottles. Narrow-mouth containers are the simplest and lightest, and we highly recommend them for ultralight backpacking. Unfortunately, they do have limitations - they are hard(er) to fill from creeks and lakes, difficult to clean, are a pain to use with powdered drinks, and the narrow mouth is prone to freezing in cold temperatures. Some manufacturers offer a "zip-type" opening in their collapsible bottles to alleviate these disadvantages. If you've tried operating these with cold fingers, you know that there has to be a better way.

We like the Nalgene Cantenes. A simple, screw-top, wide-mouth opening is easy to use, easy to clean, and can be operated even with mittens and gloves - which is the biggest benefit of the wide mouth screw top bottle over the zip type closures of other brands.

Often, we'll use a Nalgene Cantene in conjuction with a narrow-mouth (non-zip) Platypus bladder for summertime backpacking. When the weather gets colder, and especially in the winter, you'll only find Nalgene Cantenes in our backpacks. After several seasons of use, we find them to be durable, impart no plastic tastes into the water, and are easy to clean.

Plus, their collapsible nature means that they not only save space in your pack when they aren't in use, but you can eliminate air when they are full (or partially filled), eliminated the annoying sloshing sounds as you walk down the trail.

Here's a luxury you can't do with a narrow mouth bottle but can easily be done with a Nalgene Cantene: add some mountain snow (from a clean snowfield of course) to your water and enjoy refreshingly cold water through the heat of the day.

Best of all, the Nalgene Cantene is nice and light: 2.8 oz for a 3.0 liter bottle.
