In partnership with Montana Council BSA, Backpacking Light offers this program exclusively for registered BSA leaders and high adventure staff.


Course Overview

This course is offered by Backpacking Light in partnership with the Montana Council BSA and the Boone and Crockett Club at the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch.

Registration for this course will close on when full. Space is EXTREMELY limited, please register early. Full payment is required at time of registration to hold your slot (credit card payment and online registration is mandatory).

WS2-BSA provides an introduction to the latest advances in lightweight backpacking gear and techniques, including packing systems, sleep systems, cooking systems, clothing systems, shelter systems, and more, and is tailored to the dynamics of Boy Scout High Adventure Crews and Scout Troops.

Eligibility: This course is for registered SCOUTS and LEADERS of the Boy Scouts of America. The minimum age is 15. Proof of BSA registration and a Class III/ABC physical are required. Scouts who are 15-17 years of age must be accompanied by a designated leader who is 21 years of age or older from their unit/district/council/program, have demonstrated backpacking experience, and be at least a STAR rank.

Certification: This is a mandatory course for Montana BSA High Adventure Ultralight Backpacking Program Staff. Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a certificate of completion for: "BSA High Adventure: Ultralight Backpacking".

The purpose of this course is to train high adventure trek staff, and other Scout leaders, in the following:

  • The equipment, skills, and philosophy of ultralight backpacking
  • Safety protocols for conducting ultralight wilderness travel programs
  • BSA Weather Smart, Trek Safely, and Youth Protection Training
  • Teaching and demonstration methods for ultralight skills
  • Planning, logistics, and emergency management of ultralight treks with Scouts
  • Incorporating ultralight backpacking into the Patrol Method
  • Ultralight backpacking's relationship to the Scout Oath, Law, and Motto
  • Preparing for a Philmont Expedition in lightweight style


  • RYAN JORDAN: Course Director, Senior Instructor, Backpacking Light Wilderness Trekking School. Montana Council BSA High Adventure Chair, Scoutmaster Troop 676 (Bozeman, Montana Council), Eagle Scout, CEO & Founder Backpacking Light (about | website)
  • PAT STARICH: Former Scoutmaster of BSA Troop 511 in Calgary, Alberta, currently coordinating the troop’s outdoor and high adventure programs. Pat has first-hand experience with lightweight packing tips and strategies for Philmont, having served as a crew advisor in 2011. He also has a passion for wilderness travel and typically spends 40-50 days and nights in the wilds annually. Recent treks include long distance trips in the Wind River Range, Kananaskis and Ten Peaks Ranges of the Canadian Rockies, Teton Range, and South Alaska Range. As a professional geophysicist, he guides multi-week scientific expeditions to remote areas of North America.

Course Logistics

Schedule: WS2-BSA starts with a morning classroom session in the comfort of our remote mountain retreat center. Then, you and your course mates embark on a 4-day, 3-night journey so you can practice and learn new skills in a backcountry environment. We'll end your course back at our retreat center with a short debrief.

  • 8:30 a.m. Classroom session starts.
  • 12:30 p.m. Lunch
  • 1:15 p.m. Field prep sessions starts.
  • 3:15 p.m. Field session starts.

  • Intended Audience: BSA Trek Leaders, High Adventure Staff, Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, and Senior Scouts
  • Current BSA Medical Form (Including all of Parts A, B, and C) Required (download here)
  • This course involves a short duration high adventure trek in mountainous terrain. All participants must meet BSA Height and Weight Requirements AND have a body mass index of < 30. If your BMI > 30, or you fall outside the BSA Height and Weight Requirements (you will be weighed in on Thursday), you will not be allowed to participate - no exceptions or refunds. A BMI of less than 25 is strongly recommended.
  • Start/End: The Montana High Adventure Base at the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch (Boone and Crockett Club) near Dupuyer Montana: click for directions. Additional overnight accommodations, and transportation to and from Great Falls, may be available for an additional charge by inquiring directly with the Montana High Adventure Base.
