What do you get when you cross an anorexic sheep with a designer of backpacking gear?
The lightest weight superfine merino wool in the world: 115 g/m2.
Backpacking Light has introduced this fabric in its new Merino UL line that includes a short sleeved shirt, a long-sleeved shirt, and long john bottoms.
These items are meant to be worn next to skin so you realize the maximum benefits of ultralight merino: moisture management, thermoregulation, odor resistance, and comfort.
Limitations: Merino wool this light does not come without limitations. These garments cannot withstand the repeated abrasion of pack straps from a heavy backpack, and they cannot resist the attacks of thorns, briars, or devil's club. They are less durable than a synthetic (nylon or polyester) garment of a similar weight, and require the utmost care in washing for maximum life expectancy: use wool cleaner and hand wash only for best results.
However, for the skilled backcountry traveler adept at caring for their gear, you'll find that the benefits of Merino UL will far outweight these disadvantages because of the comfort offered by wearing such lightweight merino.
This sizing chart is only a guide. Different styles may have different size ranges and different fits. Merino UL shirts are considered "trim" and neither "full cut" nor "skin tight". Merino UL Long John Pants are better defined by "skin tight" reflective of leggings, rather than the "trim" defined by "loose tights".
