The quest for the perfect item in your clothing system requires the right combination of weight, comfort, warmth, sun protection, wind resistance, and durability. As a backpacker you probably carry a small handful of clothing in your layering system, and you want each piece to cover as many of these bases as possible while still succeeding in its main purpose.
The main purpose of a baselayer will vary with the seasons, but it is primarily designed to either keep the sun off your skin in summer months or hold in precious body heat in the shoulder season and in the cold hours of the evening, night, and morning. Backpacking Light introduces the UL Merino Wool Hoody to our UL Merino wool series of clothing to round out a set of extremely lightweight baselayer options for the minimalist backpacker, backcountry skiier, mountaineer, or general outdoor enthusiast.

The fabric used in the Backpacking Light UL Merino clothing line is extremely fine, minimizing the itchiness often associated with wool. How fine the fabric is also minimizes weight per yard of fabric, keeping these wool pieces at an absolute minimum. Durability can be compromised if caution isn't taken in the putting on and taking off of these items, but with the proper care, the user will find these pieces to be a perfect blend of warmth, comfort, and function.
Functionally the UL Merino Hoody excels. The thinness of the fabric and qualities of the Merino wool hold precious body heat where it should be - - next to the body. However this same functionality also allows the user to thermo-regulate by rolling up the sleeves and taking off the hood. In the cool of a mountain morning or the chill nighttime, the sleeves can be down and the hood pulled up, providing for a toasty warmth. As the sun rises and the temperatures climb, remove the hood, roll the sleeves, and let some of the heat go.
The fabric located at the front of the neck on the hood is sewn so that the hood successfully encloses the neck without need for a zipper. The natural stretch of the Merino wool and the overlapping fabric at the neck ensures that the hood flips up over the head easily, yet stays in place atop the head in windy conditions.
