Batteries are a pain and have weight cost. Is there a glass half full version of story that says steristraw is more ideal to buy and use?

With all due respect, you are way off the planet.
A Steri Straw is meant for use with distilled water, or clean tap water. Read their instructions. No-where do they mention trying to use it for treating backcountry water on their web site. Just the wrong thing for the job.

Thaddeus,

Roger's correct here. If you don't want a unit w/batteries, get a Sawyer mini...or most any other filter.

Batteries are a pain and have weight cost"

Residual water in a filter has a weight cost too... unless you have a day or more between uses to dry the filter out it will weigh more and you will be packing more than the listed, dry weight.

back-flushing a filter is a pain also...

every piece of gear has its advantages and disadvantages...

Good insightful answers... Weight of water held in filter is a good one. I have the Sawyer mini... I've been thinking of trading off to another method. Thx guys!
