Does anyone know where I can get someone to add pit zips to a jacket? Looking for a company or someone with good myog skills. Anyone?

gear repair in Seattle on 05/11/2014 17:56:43 MDT Print View

Rather far for you, but www.rainypass.com probably could do it, they've got lots of technical skill at repairs. The worst problem I can think of is that there might not be enough fabric for a protective flap over top, so you will probably need a waterproof zipper, preferably one that has 2 sliders meeting in the middle. Sometimes called a "bag zipper" as they are sought after for women's purses.

Hi,
I'll certainly post my opinions on the pit zips after I try it out for a while.
It's a great jacket , but I find that I sweat a lot wearing it while exerting myself beyond regular trekking, as in climbing, huffing and puffing etc.
I got a great deal on it from Midwest Mountaineering a few years back other wise I wouldn't spend the money.(not too much).

I heard back from Rainy pass and they can do the mods but I didn't realize how expensive it was going to be. I'm going to have to think about this one a little more.

Jerry do you have any recommendations? I would be looking for a similar jacket to the Rab Momentum (3L eVent) ~12oz with pitzips.

Sorry, I'm a pit zip bigot - I haven't found them to be useful - just a fashion or fad. But other people swear by them and who knows, I could change my mind : )

Tom -

Reviving an old thread... Do you mind sharing how the pit zip mod worked out from Zpacks?
Also:
1) were/are the pit zips made with waterproof zippers?
2) how long did you make them?

Thanks!

"Local" pit zip mod on 01/03/2015 20:34:42 MST Print View

I've had a local tailor do four jackets for me. If you supply them with the correct coil zipper (2 pulls, one at each end) and mark EXACTLY where you want them a tailor can do it.

HINT: When you bring the jacket to the tailor have the arm pit seams already unstitched where you want the zipper and it may lower the price a bit.

Peter,
The addition of the pit zips has helped bring down the inside temperature in the jacket. Not eliminated the problem but it sure feels a lot better now. Zpacks did an impeccable job.I tried to take some pictures but they really don't show well.

The zippers are 12.5 inches long and I believe they are the waterproof uretek zips.
I had assumed that the Event material was going to be a huge step in getting rain gear to breath better but I found myself sweating as much as ever.

Thanks Eric & Tom-

Not sure what a local tailor would ask for but if Joe still charges $30, that seems hard to beat... I'll give him a call tomorrow.

cheers,

Peter
