I'm sorry to report that this is a negative deal.

REI just raised its price for Esbit fuel. The standard package of 12 cubes 14 grams each used to be $6.95. It just went to $7.95.

Hopefully there is a better deal out there.

Yep - Coughlans tablets are usually about $3-4 for a similar sized pack.

I've never found Couglans fuel to be quite as good as Esbit, and there seems to be more residue.

I get mine at a Sports Chalet for $5.99 for a 12 pack (California). If the store is out, I pay for it in the store and they will ship it to me for free. Best regards - Jon

I've purchased the Bleuet cubes before. The advertising shows them as white. The ones that I got were pink. I'm still trying to figure out what that means.

Bob, did you buy them in October, when they have their annual breast cancer awareness sale?

It seems that Campmor offers the standard Esbit package for $5.99.

2nd coghlans...

My local store has them for $2.59 for 24 6.5g tabs. I use one for coffee/drinks and two for dinners.

So they are less than half the cost per gram and more versatile than the Esbit brand 14g

When you use two, do you set them next to each other or use the second after the first burns out?

Yea i just put them together in my esbit tray.. and yes the Cog's may leave a littttle more residue but there is going to be residue anyway..doesn't make much of a difference.(def not enough to justify paying more than double for Esbit brand). I usually do a quick scrape on grass or something before putting it in my stuff sack. and yes the bottom of the stuff sack gets gunky but thats why I use the stuff sack.. then i just throw everything including sack in the sink when i get home and good its as new.

Fuel Tabs on 05/05/2014 12:48:56 MDT Print View

+1 to everything Jason says about Coghlan's fuel tabs. I ran about a half dozen reasonably-well controlled tests in 2009 and convinced myself that there is little or no difference in boiling times or time until flameout when using the Coghlan's vs. Esbit. Close enough performance for me.
