Runner seeks trail close to Vegas strip! on 04/15/2014 12:25:31 MDT Print View

BPL Nevada....Activate!

Alright you ultralight desert rats, Socal BPLer requesting advice here. I'll be up in your hood in about 3 weeks. Staying at the Luxor (yuck!) attending business seminars (yuck!) smooching with corporate lizards (yuck!) and eating continental breakfasts (yuck!). Sounds absolutely nauseating.

But, before I do myself in by guzzling my whole bottle of alcy fuel, maybe you can help....

I will be free every morning until 9am, and I happen to know that Vegas hell lies conveniently close to desert heaven. A morning run in the desert might make my afternoons more liveable in those casinos. What trails could I hit from 6am until 8am and still be back in my room by 8:40 for a quick shower? Hit me with your best shot! I've driven through Red Rock before and quickly got a crush on it, but I'm not sure if it's within reach for my needs here. Ideally, I'd like to have 3 routes to do, one for each day. Class 2/3 routes are a plus.

Hook a brother up!

Adan - some of those Vegas hotel lobbies are big enough to do an ultra in ...
for a class 3 route just take the stairs instead of the elevator :-)

but beyond that, don't know anything closer than Red Rocks, although there is a lot of desert out there.

Take Charleston Blvd west past the Red Rock Casino. You will come to Red Rock Canyon. There is a ~ 12 mile loop trail which is pretty good in most places, although some section may be easier to run along the shoulder.

If you drive into the BLM Park you need to buy a pass, which I think is good for a week and around $10-$15, if you are old like me you get in free with the lifetime inter-agency pass.

You could drive about 2 miles past the entrance gate and park in the photo vista lot.

Watch out for the wile burros and their relatives :)

thanks Nick! I'll definitely see if I can find trails outside the park then. If not, then I'll check out that trail you mention. I take this advice on high authority, from king desert rat himself!

I'm not local to the area but Sloan Canyon looks like it may be a fit. You can see trails on Caltopo.com on "terrain" setting. It looks like a desert hike/run that might suit you. http://www.yelp.com/biz/sloan-canyon-national-conservation-area-henderson-2 Sounds like its full of petroglyphs too.

Red rocks is really really cool.

Getting back to the strip by nine might be a pain due to traffic and stuff, but doable.
