***looks like the general consensus is for the Manistee River Trail on the 25th***

Folks,

To follow up from the very successful Meetups last year with the Michigan\Wisconsin and Colorado crew I propose two more winter trips at the Pictured Rocks Trail and Manistee River Trail.

I am based in mid Michigan so can car pool if it suits folks.

Proposed dates
21st-23rd March
4-6th April
11th-13th April

Please reply here with what date and location you would prefer.

Cheers,

Stephen

I totally could do April 4-6, and I'd be up for either Manistee or Pictured Rocks. I need a trip up north anyway, so it would be nice to head to my old stomping grounds!

Manistee would be nice because then CharlieDog could join us................he likes Manistee a lot!!

Hi Kenneth,

Thats right, we would either combine the Manistee River & North Counry Trial in to a loop or else do an out and back on the Manistee, I dont mind which one.

I am thinking we would meet either at the trail head or in the town of Mesick which is about 10 miles aways.

It will depend on what time folk want to meet but I can meet any time after 2\3pm, It won't be dark until 8.30\9.00 so we could meet much later also.

I will get everyones email closer to the trip and we will work out the logistics offline.

Hi Nathan,

If we do the full loop it would be best to start at Marilla Trail head and do the route
Anti clockwise, we would need to "camel" up with water for Friday night/Saturday morning as getting to the river
Can be a pain from the North County trail, we would then hit the river and have as much water as we want
For the rest of the weekend. My buddy reckons doing this way is better than doing it clockwise.

It would be great to have you and your wife along.

That sounds like it would work, I've not done the trail that particular way before.
I have done it several times clockwise and counter-clockwise, but always from the south side of the loop. Each of those ways works well too. If you do the west side first, you just have to carry enough water till you get to Eddington Creek (maybe about 8 miles), then after that, water is usually plentiful.

Camping on the NCT side (west) is wild, but less water and less people.
But the view is not as good. FS side (east) more water, better, view, but fixed sites.

I am unfortunately not going to be able to get up there for the weekend. I broke my ankle last month and I'm not going to be going for any walks just yet. Sniff, sniff....

But my favorite way to do the loop is to stay at the red bridge campsites right by the highway on Friday night, hike north along the NCT Saturday and camp about a third of the way back down the MRT side. Then hike back to the cars Sunday. I think I'm one of the few people who actually really like the NCT side. The MRT side is soooo crowded these days and I really like the terrain of the NCT side...no need to do an out and back.

So if I were going that would be my vote ;)

Have fun guys....I'll be sad.......

I enjoy doing it exactly the same way as Jennifer: head up the NCT, cross over, go down a bit on the MRT and camp on one of those terrific campsites on the bluffs Saturday night. Down the rest of the MRT on Sunday.
NCT from the south starts with a big climb to get you in the mood. Then teases you with view-less vistas. Really makes you earn those great river views around the bend. Love it!

It seems I am the only one who doesn't think of the NCT side as a slog! No, it doesn't have the vistas that the MRT side has, but I really like the trail. I like the area around Eddington Creek (there is a very cool super secret campsite on the opposite side of the little "canyon" (not sure what else to call it) just as you approach the creek crossing. It has access to the creek and is tucked away in the pine trees.

NOAA snow depth chart shows 0" for the region as of today. The ten day forecast (Mesick) indicates after this Tuesday, highs generally around 50-55 lows mid 30's till 4-22. The Manistee river is at flood stage right now but should drop considerably since the snow is out.

I went for a day hike back on Tuesday at a local park, it looked quite similar to your picture. I would imagine that your ground is still frozen a bit further down. Are you hearing any spring peepers yet? Hit about 78 here today, it was great!

It hit 74f today, plenty of wildlife around now.
I read somewhere last week that the ground is frozen to 5feet.

NOAA reports that all-time record flood levels will occur on the Manistee. Depending on how far down Hodenpyl was drawn down this winter, it will remain to be seen how levels below the dam will play out. The MRT side could be very boggy.

Different locations-The Jordan RP may not be any better, that valley could also be extremely wet. High Country/Shingle area perhaps? Maybe something on the sandy coast, Sleeping Bear or Nordhouse? Canoeing instead?

Maybe we could reevaluate by this Sat.

Hi Dean,

Lets look at the conditions on Sunday and make a call on a new location.

The High Country Pathway could be an optiopn also.

I really wish Michigan had decent Mountains.

Fall back plan on 04/20/2014 15:46:35 MDT Print View

Folks,

We may need to look at a fall back plan if the MRT is still flooded.

What do folk think?

Hoist Lakes, Shingle Mill/High Country? I'm thinking that if the MRT is a washout it's likely the JRP would be pretty boggy also, especially the north half. The Manitous aren't open yet. Sleeping Bear? Any one else have some ideas?

The High Country could be an option.

I was flying from Chicago to Saginaw today and could see a lot
of flooding.

MRT... on 04/20/2014 17:21:21 MDT Print View

I'm looking around online and it appears that flood waters are receding or have already. Waters are below flood stage in Sherman but levels are still classified as 'Near Flooding'. We would be much closer to Mesick than ShermanWater level forecasts are predicting further decline.
I'm wondering if this is because the MRT is downstream of the Hodenpyl Dam?
The gauge in Wellston (just south) is also below flood stage.

I went for a little wander last night on a portion of the Midland-Mackinac trail that was under water a few days ago. It was surprisingly muck free and I wound up sleeping out there. I know that it is a completely different watershed but it was confidence inspiring.

EDIT*- Just noticed my picture is useless, - it is supposed to show that there is no flooding reported on the Manistee river @ Hopendyl Dam, the north end of the MRT.

Hi Kyle,

Thats good to know.

I am not too worried about camping on the MRT as a lot
of the sites are high up, but a lot of the trail is very close to the river.

Fingers crossed it will be fine for next weekend.

It's on my calendar and I'd really like to go... BUT I'm not a winter camper and I'm a total weenie about the cold. They're forecasting below freezing temps for Saturday night. If that improves, I'm in. Otherwise, I'm on the fence...

Hi Sumi,

Thats no bother at all, I personally love the cold as it keeps the bugs at bay.

Hopefully will see you this weekend,

Stephen

Like Sumi, I'm on the fence because of the forcasted low temps. I don't do well with the cold ( poor circulation from heart issues, I'm always cold unless it's 60 degrees or more ). Hopefully it will warm up a bit.

Hi Nathan,

The forecast is down to freezing at the weekend, but could easily warm up, as I take the forecast with a pinch of salt.

Thats a shame you are restricted to warm weather outings.

Hope to see you their.
