I'm looking for places to backpack that are within 2.5 hours from Sacramento. The purpose of the trip is to get prepared for bigger backpacking trips in Summer. The caveat is that I want to go in mid to late May and don't want to deal with the snow. Trip length is 2 nights and 3 days. Any tips would be appreciated.

Cache creek wilderness is good in may. If its another light snow year the pct north of boreal is good for scouts. Grouse ridge is near camp marin sierra. I think plumas nf has lower elevations where snow melts a little earlier. point reyes and sunol wilderness are near the outer limits of 2.5 hours. I'm asm out of vacaville. Check high adventure links at gec. Diablo and sf councils.

Might take a look at the Ishi Wilderness above Chico off of 32 or Cohasset, but it has ticks due to the deer there and Poison Oak. The Coast?

PS: We still have snow on the Plumas in May.

We're going to Ishi in April, Point Reyes in two weeks. Snow Mountain might be good in May depending upon how wet the season is.

In the past we have hit Big Basin above Santa Cruz and Butano on the coast in May. Great time to do the Berry Falls trail.

Sunol in the East Bay has backpacking, too. Went there as a kid ages ago.
