A weekend with Ediza on 10/01/2013 17:51:20 MDT Print View

It's been a while since I last posted a TR here. I just want to say "Thank You" to everyone. I recently did my first lightweight multi-day trip in the Sierra Nevada Range and I couldn't be any happier.

For the 3-Day trip I was at 18.8lbs (3 days food not counting water(1L)). Compared to everyone else on this trip, I was the lightest :)

First of all it is Sierra; not Sierras or Sierra's.
It is the Sierra Nevada Range.... not the Sierras Nevada or Sierra's Nevada Range. There is no need for an 's' to make the range plural as there is only one Sierra Nevada Range in California. Further, there is no need for an apostrophe before the 's' as there is no need to indicate possession or a conjunction of Sierra and 'is'.... I get so tired of hearing the Sierra's... it sounds like fingernails on chalk board or... the screech or a bad note by a poor singer...

Thank God we didn't make a grammatically incorrect landing of the moon. It would have spoiled everything.

Nevermind the nitpickers. Congrats on your first Sierra trip. Beautiful clear pictures of all those lakes. I bet you can't wait to go back.

Yes Bill you are correct. Might as well correct the thousands that make that mistake....that being said, nice pics, glad you got to go to that area. Been to 1000 Island and Garnett but not any inspired me for a summer trip for next year as I keep on forgetting about this area

It seems that most groups going in this direction camp at Lake Ediza, simply because there is more tree cover. The trail up to Iceberg Lake isn't so bad, but there are few trees there. The trail from Iceberg up to Lake Cecile is very steep, and there are even fewer trees there. That is the normal camp for climbers heading up Clyde Minaret.

Great shots Angus. The last time I was at Ediza was before you were born. I still have fond memories of it. Hope to see you soon on a local trip in the San Gabriels--oops, sorry but we're not allowed to say that anymore.....

Thanks for the criticism Bill, the way you describe your irritation towards my grammatical errors are succinct. I appreciate the peer edit and I will correct the errors post haste.

Luckily, backpacking has taught me patience and has allowed me to not take things too seriously :)

On another note, I am looking forward to future trips to the Sierra Nevada Range next summer ;) Don, I can now understand why you head to the JMT every year.

Thanks everyone for the kind words...

@Bill, The correct word is nice, not "ice." Unless, of course, you were implying that Mangus's "pics" are cool, like ice.

Nice pictures, Magnus. Thank you for sharing.

Nice pics and grammar on 11/12/2013 08:03:35 MST Print View

Truly beautiful country, and your photos capture that beauty well! Thanks!

As far as English grammar, and speaking as a descriptive linguist, about the only stable words in English are the function words: prepositions, articles, conjunctions, etc. Content words (nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives) change easily and often. In fact, one of the great beauties of English is how readily it changes to incorporate new words, technologies and situations. It is a living language and little subject to definitive rules as in Latin, a dead language, which is where the British originally got the idea that grammatical rules had priority over usage. I'm sorry for your irritation, Bill, but I'm afraid "Sierras" is well established in American usage, and its use will continue despite your protest. Just like the use of "impact" as a noun (historically it was a verb) will continue despite my daughter's anger at this common "misuse".

Nice pics/photos. Last time I was through there was with my Yellow Lab X, Pooch, RIP. We did a loop staying the second night at Ediza and moving past Iceberg and Cecile, that was a good scramble for him. I think on that trip we got snowed on the last day out, making a hasty exit from Hemlock Crossing area to Silver Lake. A long day that was.
