Wonderland Trail Section Hike on 09/22/2013 22:30:44 MDT Print View

Last week I drove to Mt. Rainier with the hopes of through-hiking the Wonderland Trail. Unfortunately things did not go as well as I had hoped due to a bum knee but I was able to hike a 30 mile section of the Wonderland and see areas like Indian Bar, Panhandle Gap, Summerland, and the Sunrise Visitor Center.

While I was very disappointed to leave the trail early, I was grateful that I had an opportunity to spend a few days on the trail doing something that I love. Because I knew that I would be returning to the Wonderland next year with my daughter on a leisurely 10 day itinerary, I used my iPhone as my only camera and did not have much time to invest to quality photography. Long-term goal is to improve the quality by this time next year.

Unfortunately my pictures are so-so as a result. If you are interested in reading a more in-depth trip report.....

Ian,
Your so-so pictures of your abreviaed hike revealed a diverse and beautiful landscape…and no rain. Sounds good to me. :)

Thanks Tom! I had a lovely time on the trail and the weather was very out of character for Rainier.

Nice. If you saw Indian Bar and Summerland, you may have seen the two best scenic areas IMO. Finished a thru-hike last summer. As for the pics, many are using just a smartphone camera and doing well. (Other than the charging issues) . Free editing apps help jazz up the pictures nicely. Enjoy your thru hike next year!

Thanks Dana. Some of the pictures were great but I had real hard time getting the phone to focus. It doesn't help that my eyes are fuzzy anyways but I'd take several pictures of something and then find that they were all out of focus when I got home. I realized that the phone is not a perfect replacement for a proper camera but this was one of my worst experiences with it.

All I have to do is hike the north section and a small portion of the west and I'll have seen all of the trail. The west side has such a different feel to it and the meadows around Indian Henry's were heaven on earth for me (despite the mosquitos). I very much doubt that next year's through hike will be my last on the Wonderland as I really enjoy this area.
