Borah Gear give-away “NAME THAT TARP”

Hi BPL members,

I work with John at Borah Gear, I sew the tarps.

I came up with a new design for a tarp and we wanted to post it here first, and ask BPL members to come up with a name for the new design. The person that comes up with the name that we choose gets the final prototype of the tarp for free!
This will be listed as a 2 person shelter/tarp and it can be set up using trekking poles, branches, or tying off from trees in an unlimited amount of different configurations, from your basic flat tarp to a modified lean to, and when the weather turns bad you can put it into storm mode to keep out the bad weather.
The tarp weighs in at 13.3 oz and it measures 15 ½ feet long from tip to tip , (but the tarp is rarely used at this length, this would be mainly for maximum shade), and measures 8’ wide at the widest point, these are the measurements if you were to lay the tarp flat.

When pitched in storm mode the sleeping area is approx. 6’ wide x 7 ½“ long with a minimum peak height of 34” when it is set all the way to the ground in storm mode.
Most configurations will only be approx. 10’x7’ or less, while this may seem like a big foot print, it’s really not, I’ve had the much bigger prototype(#3 18'x 10') set up in the same space as a 2 man tent, if you included their vestibules.

So here's to helping us come up with a name and to someone getting a new tarp, we only ask that you do not resale it, but PIF it to the next person if you decide you don't need it anymore.

The winner will be chosen by John and I and announced here on BPL, and we will only run this contest until Sun., the sooner we come up with a name the sooner we can post it on the web site!

Once the name has been chosen we will post them for sale at $135.00
At borahgear.com

Any and all feed back is appreciated, good luck everyone.

Thanks, John and Jack from Borahgear

Here it is in storm mode with the door in the half open position, when the weather gets bad just close it up.

proto type #5

This is the other end showing it completly closed up in storm mode.

proto type #5

This is a modified lean to, I used this set up on a hike up to Shepherds Pass and it worked really well to block the wind so I could cook.

proto type #5

These next 3 pictures are the tarp in a basic lean to with the wings spread out, lots of room under there on this set up.

Some early ideas for names are "Shapeshifter" for the obvious reasons, "Morph" in a similar vein, and "Swallow" just because the door wing in some of the pictures reminded me of a swallow's tail. Looks pretty neat

If you make a cuben version, you can expand on Wm Chilton's idea and make it the (wait for it...)
Rubic Cuben

Since you consider it a mere tarp instead of a tent, you could call it (groan...)
Borah Mere (great for protecting hobbits).

For a hint of Polynesia, maybe "Borah Bora[h]".

Since it weighs only 13.3 oz, perhaps it's the "Borah Less".

(I better stop there...that's probably enough PUNishment.)

I first saw this in the Emigrant Wilderness and a lot of companies call their gear after peaks, passes, or areas of land so why not the:

Emigrant Tarp/Shelter

or a few others that come to mind are:

Tempest

Janus, after the Roman god of change

Nyx or Nox after the god of the night

Dragoman, means guide

Et Hoc Genus Omne, means Et cetera because there are so many ways to set it up.

Torpid, feelings of laziness because your under such a great tarp

There were some other great one mentioned already too. I'm excited to see this made available to the public.

Hey Jack,
Why did you put the door flaps on opposite sides of the tarp ridge line?
If they were on the same side it could be pitched as a lean to with two wings to close the sides.
That would offer great protection from the elements and be great in front of a fire.
If bad weather brewed, the front could then be simply lowered.
As it is, it would have to be completely re-pitched.

Otherwise, it almost reminds me of a mini-version of the Calvin Rutstrum convertible A tent.

I'm not only trying to appeal to the all important ego of the stitcher here. Us light weight backpackers love gear that is adaptable/multi-use, but we mostly use tarps because of the weight savings. The most common use of the word Jack is the saying... Jack of all Trades. Save enough weight and you're dancing up from the valley to the pass, to the peak... Freedom. There are dozens of clever names in here and a few hilarious ones. lol

For whatever reason, it wasnt the tarp design that gave me ideas for names, rather it was the request to "Pay It Forward" when the winner is ready to retire the tarp and move on to something else. I actually thought it was a very profound and important request. Name it the "Karma" tarp or give yourself the credit, Jack, call it the "PIF" to keep it simple.

Reflecting on that idea, I'm going to make more of an effort to "pay it forward" more often. I can't remember the last time I just gave someone an outdated, retired, or outgrown piece of gear. I've lent plenty that never made it home, but otherwise I think I've pretty much either hoarded my gear or sold it, and I know I'm not alone in this. It's a prudent idea that we should "pay forward" perfectly good gear so other young and old outdoor enthusiasts that we run into can get something different (and hopefully positive) from their experiences in the backcountry. We don't always *need* the money or extra gear, but who doesn't need good juju? Boom! You could also call also name it the "Juju" tarp... Or name it the "Hippy" after me and my random introspective moments on BPL ;)

Those lean to pics just remind me of a stealth bomber, especially if you flip the design so that there are attached doors on one side at both ends, as someone suggested.

Plus it gives you a bomber pitch.

"NAME THAT TARP" on 09/22/2013 23:39:27 MDT Print View

Hello, to everyone that participated.

The "NAME THAT TARP" is now officially closed for posting names.

A big thank you for everyone that joined in, it's been really fun to watch this thread grow, we had a total of 256 names, if my math is correct.

The response was overwhelming, we appreciate everyones contribution, and we do have a winner, it wasn't easy with all the names to choose from, but here we go, "DRUM ROLL PLEASE"

And the winner of the New Tarp Design goes to:

Dale Wambaugh

for coming up with the name "Borahgami"

John should have this posted on the web site borahgear.com by this coming week for anyone else that may be interested in buying one.

Stayed tuned for more from Borahgear, as we are working on some new projects.

Again, thank you everyone for your participation, this has been a blast!

Thanks, John & Jack at Borahgear

Now that the name is settled for it, can we get some more details on it...
I'd love to see some of the basic dimensions with the most traditional pitch(length, width, peak height)...
Also details on the fabric used and tie out locations perhaps!
Thank you!

Hi Jesse,

Sorry for the slow response, I've been trying to catch up on things around the house and at work.

As soon as I get the next Borahgami finished I can get those measurements for you, let me know what configuration you would like me to measure.

Right now when the tarp is laid flat it measures 8' x 7 1/2', this would be just the portion of the tarp without the wings, minimum peak height was 34" set up in storm mode, but that can be adjusted with how high you want to set the tarp off the ground, so if you rasied it 3-4" that would change the peak height to around 37-38"

If you use the tie outs on the wings in storm mode that will get you about another 6" at each end.

The tie outs are located at the 90* point where the door would close (at the top were the ridge line is at)a tie out on each wing tip and a tie out between the wing tip and the corner tie out, one at each corner of the tarp as it is in storm mode, and then one on each side in the middle along the bottom, plus 2 pull outs one on each side that are in the middle of each pannel, these are put on with silicone adhesive then the tie outs are sewed on to those.

The material used is silnylon 30D from Noah Lamports

I hope this answers some of your questions.

12 tie outs total around the perimeter with 2 pull outs one on each side.

Jack
