Very interesting "This American Life" episode from August 16, # 503.
One of the two segments reports on the idea, currently being applied and studied, of giving money to the poor directly. Comparing results between letting people choose how to spend it and making those choices for them.
There seems to be lots of resistance from charity organizations, yet it seems worth looking at and studying.

Seems counter-intuitive. Giving money directly to people is supposed to turn them into dependent leaches. Rather than the people should know best how to spend the money, they know what they need.

Interesting that when they proposed doing controlled experiments, the standard charities wanted no part - you can't measure all the effects. That is total B.S. to me, but normal for humans that resist change.

I like the idea of testing new ideas and approaches and seeing what happens.

The fabulously rich John Beresford Tipton (The Millionaire) did some research in this area many years ago. Here's a link (sorry I couldn't find a picture of him):
